I kissed your hand you held it out to me in a song

you were taking photographs of children dying

I was shooting madmen in a jungle

I came home took drugs and fucked whores

you went home and fucked life and decried wars

I stripped skin from my worthless corpse

you put flesh on lost causes and pissed on cornflakes

I hated you and loved you too

you hated me and never imagined love

and now we fight all our battles together

my bullets wake your world your world spits bullets back

We are a fucking battle of love

and I surrender

Every place we ever were before we met

is littered with bodies and shit we can’t forget

Thanks all,

thanks Ray and Phil and thanks for your thoughts on the f word. My previous life mostly in the company of men has left my language rather colourful, in my defence I am able to turn it off and rarely curse accidentaly or simply just for effect.

Phil I have fond memories of SL even though I saw some of the most horrific things I have ever seen. I am familiar with the docks in Freetown as HMS Westminster pulled alongside to resup the High Commission whislt I was there, it was the South Atlantic Patrol ship at the time and was chugging south. We also needed its helicopter for a couple of days, which was nice.

I met loads of refugees in Freetown as the region was so unstable with Charles Taylor running amok in Liberia, also met some very unsavoury Russians...and a couple of good ones. They were great days if you could at some point leave, not so much if you were captive.

Did you ever go to Conakry what a shithole that place is/was?

Thanks again,

I love this David. I remember Sierra Leone well. The fucks in this are well meaning and deserved.
Love strikes in the most haunting of circumstances and isn’t always both ways.
I always wander how cathartic these writings of your past are?
A magnificent piece.

Hi David. It's good that you stayed with the mood of your piece in expressing yourself in such strident terms. Sometimes the way you feel is as important as content I believe, but you have drawn from the well of experience too in no uncertain way. This is a case of how powerful is the use of Fuck or fucked, and as we know there are various connotations of it . All well and good.

Many of the evils of society are done without much fuss, I reckon, as are the good things. We thus often take them for granted.

Thanks folks and thanks for all the likes too.

Kate, there is some poetic licence in here but much of it is accurate. I did do an audio track but to be honest it was overly indulgent.

This is based on a period of time during 1999-2000 which I spent in Sierra Leone, without going into detail horrific things were going on there at the time. I became acquainted with several international reporters who liked to rub us up for information, some attached themselves to our orbit as they felt safer..I don't actually think they necessarily were tbh. Anyway in environments like that people often form dependent attachments even if they are in other ways opposed in attitudes, a strange dynamic.

The things which are on licence here are...I have never taken illegal drugs in the UK, that's about it to be honest..I'm guilty of the rest but would claim mitigation in that I felt a duty as a soldier to behave in certain demeaning ways. I'm over that now..and I haven't slept with a journalist for over ten years.

Thanks again folks.

PS, I do actually think there are too many f___s in the piece, that said I am inclined to leave them in as I was definitely in that frame of mind when I wrote it, so it's more accurate I think.

I love this Wolfgar, is it autobiographical? Sounds like a great yarn to be had over a pint.

I am fond of programmes like "Come dine with me" even more so "couples come dine with me" I often cringe when it comes to the how did you meet question...I mean, "Oh we met online" etc etc

How much more fulfilling to meet your beloved over the smouldering corpse of a dead child, I mean what a foundation for a modern bullshit after that eh..

What happens when a grunt falls for a hack? that sounds like an abomination of worlds.
