Bolton Abbey

Nothing can be written of beauty

for serenity is silent.

Only cannon and drum

can pepper the page.

These hallowed places cleansed by blood,

their gift is peace.

Across history riders rode

Angel and Demon,

Tyrants sent emissary’s,

altars smashed and crosses burned

From darkest night

came the brighter day.

Through stoney ruins Sunlight floods,

the blackest deeds are drowned

tis only in wake of war

that peace in truth is found.

Thanks KJ,

You should try and get along when it's quieter, beautiful place.

Hope you're doing OK.

David.

I love Bolton Abbey, but have only ever been there in the summer months. Far from the peaceful scene you describe it is a busy bustling place. I'll have to make an effort to go out of season, it sounds much better.

Thanks Ray,

It seems that mankind requires purpose, I used to believe we needed collective purpose now I just don't know.

As I get older my vista grows broader but strangely my concerns narrow, how much of ourselves can we give and still remain the same?

I think maybe in the end our reward is the simple things, a smile from a child, to breathe good air and to live free...if we're lucky.

For those who open their minds and suspend enough thought, there is always a way in to deeper things - which you have demonstrated here so well David. Sometimes poetry pours in and nourishes us . Definitely a purpose served, and the evidence of past strife seems to contradict the very idea of lasting peace, and yet all dissolves eventually, leaving us the better for it.

Thanks Clarke, Phil and Dave, much appreciate your reading and comments.

Phil, I too am a happy Godless wretch. I abandoned God in my teens, much to my Vicar fathers dismay. I am though fascinated by religion and it's power, you cannot be interested in history and ignore the faiths.

Have a good week all,

David.

I can almost live it in my mind's eye as the saga unfolds.
Much enjoyed.

I love Bolton Abby and would like to read this lovely poem standing amongst its hallowed entity. I have no god but you have expressed history in such an understanding manner. Thank you David.
