For It Was Autumn

For it was Autumn

Most of the year behind us.

A summer wasted

As summers often are.

Golden and green and amber,

The sudden chill,

Though sunlit mornings still

And timeless afternoons.

I suddenly recalled a kind word,

The arms that opened just upon seeing me.

That giant moment of indecision finally settled.

And there we were . . . together.

Uncertain life,

Uncertain weather.

Subtle change and recognition,

A walk across a golden path,

An understood silence,

Two hearts in harmony,

Maybe for the first and last,

For it was Autumn then,

And like nature,

The moment passed.

So descriptive and richly imagined and expressed, ending, for me, with a touch of melancholy.

Really lovely poem, Hannah. It really captures the extraordinary beauty of ordinary things that happen to us and make us realise that life can be richer than can be described. Well done indeed.

there are two things that stick out for me in this lovely poem. How summer is often wasted due to us feeling that it is a longer season than the others (it's actually not). Secondly the transient nature of our affections mimicking the seasonal breakdown and eventual decay of Autumn.

I'm going to say it again. this is your best poem to date (I think). How you've come on HC.

An intermingling of nature and humanity beautifully blended. The fleeting changes of life articulated with skill.

Thank you for this.
