Man on the Clapham Omnibus

entry picture

The man on the London Eye said

"this is what you wanted,

just pick the choice you want to make,

we're keen to know your views,

we'll tell you which to choose"

The man on the Clapham omnibus

had nothing much to lose.

He thought it through carefully

before he made his choice,

grateful to be given voice

The London Eye man was annoyed

and urged him to think again,

but he batted it straight back saying

"I've made my choice. I'll put my trust

in the driver of the Clapham omnibus"

I have always liked the term 'man on the Clapham omnibus' since I first heard it on Rumpole of the Bailey about 30 years ago.

The man on the London Eye represents the elite in their lofty perch telling the ordinary man what's best for him, but he ignores this and is prepared to put his trust in the bus driver. He doesn't truly know if this decision is wise, but at least the bus driver is down at his level and doing what he wants.

Brian and you lot have all lost me
I thought I could work out you're subtlety
I know Clapham Junction and have rode on the Eye
But to connect these together have scuttled me

Now maybe I'm looking too deeply
Perhaps I should be brief just like Rose
And say grab a ticket on either one
This might pass as a comment, I suppose ?

Remembering the phrase in the legal past tense
The said man was the custodian of good common sense;
And if I was seeking just to journey on by,
It makes sense to avoid doing circles in the sky! ?

Fantastic views from the London Eye.
Takes a bit of trust, it's true.

Have you got a workshop manual with this Brian? With the best will in the world I can't quite work it out. Sorry, I do want to.
