Night Terror

The Toms around here carry on like

drunken gangs, upsetting bin lids

and bottles, fighting over females

and fish heads,

I am shaken by their madness,

as they weave, hissing and spraying

amongst the shadows.

The moon brings out the worst in them:

when bulbs are cooling

and toilets suck away

a final piss,

I listen, as they scream

like burning witches.

Unsettled, I step into my slippers,

stand at the window.

There is nothing,

only rows of unlit terraces,

alleyways, dull cars,

and the throat-slashing sense

of something shocking

about to happen,

as I crawl back into bed

and wait.

I lay in an anxious state riddled by fear of what the night may bring.

My neighbours like their music very loud
and their mouths even louder.
It usually ends in fits of rage

Thanks to Lockdown they have been quiet.

Your poem struck an anxious pulse running through my body.

you know how to capture the moment(s) very well.

Only the terror is theirs, is the world outside. You observe the terrors of the night as lived by those denizens specifically of the night...expressing the night itself.

But you feel no terror. It's empathy, metaphor gone experiential.

Positively shaking in my shoes! Won't go out late to the cinema any more. The ones here don't hiss or scream but yowl - we have a screech owl for the shrieks instead. Seriously - great work - like the last verse in particular- really menacing.
