Language -- it's all fingers and thumbs

He’s four years old.

Have you forgotten that four-year-olds

know things which grown-ups have forgotten ?

But when you’re four years old

it’s difficult to explain to them

why they’re wrong..

let him explain as best he can :

‘A thumb isn’t a finger !’

how many more times

does he have to tell you.. ?

Look .... four fingers, they’re for fingery things;

and a thumb, right ? That’s for thumby things.

So how can a thumb also be a fifth finger ?

And then you grown-downs wonder

how your children get screwed-up.

You can’t even talk your own language.

You want him to grow up a reasonable person

and when he uses reason for the first time...

He thumbs his nose at you. A thumb is no use

for fingering bogies. That

comes after you've caught one. QED.

Those 'experts' who say children can't reason should be told firmly : we can reason at four years old..and we never, never forgive those who don't listen to us...

I have not forgotten. I don't think anyone who is a good teacher ever forgets - such sincere relatability to childhood and youth is an essential quality to be treasured and nurtured. (P.S. I know 'relatability' is made up)
