Don't Speak

"It takes two years to learn to speak,

and all life to learn when to be quiet "

-Ernest Hemingway-

Don’t say a thing

We don’t need to talk right now

A single whisper will be too much

It’s time to end this altercation,

we’ve got be careful

Let’s put this fight away

Our tongues are so sharp

Stabbing open wounds

with two-edged sword,

over and over again

Don’t underestimate the power

Words can be hotter than fire

So easy to hurt with just one

of them

The damage done, so great

We know how to speak, shout,

Words like bullets hit the target

But to stay quiet... challenging

Close your eyes and count to ten

Shut down what you want to say

Now it’s time to let go of anger

driving frantically our temper

Let’s put our egos down to sleep

Sing sweet lullaby

Tomorrow we’ll look at the world

with brand new eyes

In the morning the storm will

be gone

Let the silence work

its magic touch

Untangling our feelings

and clearing up our thoughts

Stop, just say no more.

Hi Colin,

Thank you for explanation.

What a bliss!!! I love listening to the birds singing and chirping!!! Unfortunately in London in the area where I live, it is a luxury.

Have a great day!!! 😘

Hi Anya, to shoot the breeze means to chat and chill about unimportant things - preferably on a porch swing on a warm evening with a drink in one's hand. I have lots of sparrows here nesting in the barn walls and we talk to each other about this and that.

Yesterday evening there must have been 30 of them under the bird feeders mainly picking up the peanut scraps that were falling from the woodpecker above. I think I have unintentionally created a sparrow breeding facility . . ! 😲

Hi there,

Thank you so much for comments and likes!!!!!! 😘

Words have such power. So easy to go overboard and say too much. Just like you said Hannah, we remember forever. I agree with you Brian and Don. The uncomfortable silence, I feel it sometimes, and try to fill it up... Mr Hemingway, sums it up brilliantly, we learn all our life when and how to be quiet. Colin what does it mean; shooting breeze with the sparrows? Is that a phrase? I don't know it.

Thank you so much!!!!!

Lots of love 😘

go hug a tree Anya - it works for me - metaphorically speaking that is - I don't actually hug trees - I'm not that daft although I have a habit of shooting the breeze with the sparrows . . . 😃

We mull things over and keep going back to them until we have got things in order in our head. Until we have we don't move on. Dreams help this process.

You've hit the mark here perfectly Anya. Say no more.

Except I wanna say more 😎

Brian is right. We don't like empty spots in conversations. Gotta fill them. Don't know why we feel this way. Maybe it's only between friends who truly understand each other that silence between words is accepted. This is rare.

Hannah. We do remember words for a long time. It seems hate-spoken words get remembered forever. Damage done never forgotten

People don't like silences. Try it...have a conversation with a friend and when they finish speaking if you don't actually need to respond don't say anything. They will quickly say something to fill the silence. If you do this a few times you will see get them getting a bit uncomfortable.

We do remember words spoken for a long time, maybe forever.
Beautifully observed here, a lot of truth in this poetry.
