I Cannot Write Another

Ballads, odes, hymns, lists,

advice, nostalgic memories,

myths explored, journeys, paths,

unfinished drafts and anecdotes;

rewrote Red and other tales,

discovered prephonation,

haibun about horse racing,

comedy, and tragedy, quoting positivity,

but today I cannot do

what NaPoWriMo asked me to.

I have wrung out symphonies

from bitter fruit inside of me,

lullabies to soothe myself to sleep

and melt the ice.

I wrote my little minx

of all the wine we'll never drink,

and incandescence, that she never read.

Told the trauma of my friend:

how bullies come to be.

I've lamented dandelions,

rendered pain in parables.

I have stood in chapels, churches,

found the breath to bid farewell,

but today I cannot do

what NaPoWriMo wants me to,

for I have written one too many elegies already

and I cannot write another.

Reading this reflects a similar feeling I used to have as a pro musician, being expected to play requests by pissed twats, usually in the wrong time frame: eg The Streets of London during a disco set, or a number we had just played (again). We are not infinitely stretchable, and you amply bring that point out with wonderful definition - you can sense the emptying of a vessel, and the upending of it.
Nice work as ever.

Told, prompted...it's all semantics

Thanks Pat.

Brian - I've not been 'told' what to do, it's a prompt. I've just been surrounded by death for what feels like ages now, and didn't want to write yet another elegy.

We all get fed up being told what to and it's great to just break out and do what we want to do, even if it upsets others.

Thanks Stu. I've been having so much fun with Napo and it was a bit of a bummer to read today's prompt tbh. I could of course have chosen a completely different subject to write about, but this was my first response.
