nothing else matters

you are up there

balanced momentarily on the edge
fingertips touching the sun
the taste of your heartbeat on your tongue
startled air fizzing in your lungs

on the coping
on the crest of a wave
on the cusp of immortality

the descent is a controlled dive
a countdown to the next ecstasy
a wall of water or concrete curve
elemental in that instant
friend and foe

you went in search of perfection
and why not?
the world is your playground
there is no greater feeling than this

you call it freedom

and when you are up there on the edge
fingertips touching the sun
heart in mouth
lungs bursting

nothing else matters

thank you gents - glad you enjoyed. I was never a surfer but I was a skateboarder during and after that first exhilarating mid-70's hot summer when skateboarding fever swept across the UK. I never quite reached the dizzy heights described above but often, when I can't sleep, I go skateboarding in my head - I find it works better than counting sheep. And now my son has taken it up which gives me great pleasure. Col.

Beautiful verse, particularly:

the descent is a controlled dive
a countdown to the next ecstasy
a wall of water or concrete curve
elemental in that instant
friend and foe..

I also agree with Graham:
The taste of your heartbeat on your tongue..
Perfect Col.

Tube city Colin, I have never experienced that particular rush but wish I had.

Metaphorically, I have been crushed under that moment.

Nice one,

David.

I've been to a few dives in my time Colin.
