A definition of sanity

A definition of sanity

might be choosing not to kill when presented the opportunity.

Bashir pushes my food across the plate,

he shows me the good meat and smiles a vagabond grin.

We bring him iPads and text books,

and he buys us lunch with coke and finds us shade.

He tells me of his family here for generations

forty years he worked for my flag, his land still stolen

At the border he waves and smiles as we pull away,

at his home the power is cut, the iPads won’t work.

A definition of sanity

might be the offering of love not hate.

there is certainly a mixture of reality here with a desire to see peace reign her. Violence can be all too easy at times. More power to you David
Nice one

Thank you both,

It is rather strange in Gaza, everyone has the potential to be an enemy. The frontier crossing at Ezra is tense going in and coming out, almost everything is automated to keep distance between the guards and possible threats. Then crossing into Gaza we are picked up by seemingly friendly Hamas security officials who stay with us for the duration, there are opportunities for frank conversations though.

The amount of kids on the street is striking, not too much traffic and plenty of donkey's and carts. To be honest I found Gaza less tense than Hebron where we were confronted by a few angry Jewish settlers who really didn't like us at all.

Empathy is the thing as you say SS. The tricky part is seeing through the smiles and not believing everything you hear. Things can get very nasty very quickly in my experience, just like anywhere in the Middle East and Southern Asia.

Restraint can be extremely beneficial, something which many states seem incapable of doing.

Thanks again,

Love the poem, David, and as always, enjoy your recordings. A definition of sanity might be the ability to show empathy, rather than judge from a distance - based on the nonsense of what passes for "news".

Thanks for sharing.

Lovely compassionate poem with the masterstroke of minimal but essential detail. The potential of life taking is achingly present, and the wonderful preciousness of the individual; brings tears up mate.
