ancestral builders

of these monumental

diary-like stone crosses

telling of their ways and days

in secretive symbols

painstakingly chiselled.

What they suggest or ask of us

cannot be passed by.

Thankfully today's minds

have the abilities to translate

into modern language such ancient meanings

and unravel the tangled links between centuries.

These short story telling crucifixes

will remain forever

fixed portals

allowing us to look back through their openings

into the hard unjust existences of long ago

Succinct strange inscriptions

in shapes of birds

entwined with serpents

entwined with flowers

entwined with celestial bodies

undisclosed until now.

Statements showing such considerations

for the future

that they could be interpreted as love.

I agree with Rose on the subject of monuments and statues as to how easily and how ignorantly they can be passed by. Thank you for a lovely poem, Leon.Jemima.

Thank's Pat and Stef. These workings and constructions of so long ago are indeed astounding.

Another type of huge construction that blows me away when I look at them are the castles and cathedrals built in Norman times. How they managed to build them so high on rickety wooden scaffolding makes me shiver at the thought!

we loved this Leon. When one thinks of the time and effort put into engraving the symbols in these monuments it can only leave one totally amazed!

There again consider the efforts of the pyramid builders-wow!
