I Love You Donald Trump

I love you Donald Trump
Not because you are beautiful or smart
or because you are generous or kind
Not because we like the same kinds of music
or because we have much in common at all.

I love you Donald Trump
Not like I love my father, or my best friend
Not like I love my heroes.

I do not love the things you do
or say
or believe.

I do not love how you govern
and I do not love the way you talk.

But nevertheless...I love you.

I love you because you are a human being.

I love you because I understand what it means to respect someone's dignity.
I love you because it makes me stronger. I love you because love wins.

I love you because love always wins.

I love you because you do not love me. I love you because you cannot teach someone to love by hating them.

Because loving you is more important than hating you.
Because hating you creates nothing.
Because hating only destroys.

Sorry Alexandra, being so late to this.

I read it some time ago but haven't commented until now,

Killing them with kindness or winning them over, living by example is so very hard to do. I have nothing but admiration for those with the rationale and are goodly hearted enough to live in this way.

We have though all seen the goodly hearted being stamped on and crushed all too often. Though many may sacrifice themselves in this way I do like to think that ultimately good will win, maybe that's naive but we mustn't be discouraged.

Personally I try but usually fail, sometimes people deserve a good back handed slap to take them back to their childhood.

Great sentiment Alexandra,

David.

Alexandra, the term gospel applies to the first four books of the New Testament which focus on the teachings of Christ. He speaks of an unconditional love and when asked which is the greatest commandment he replies that it is to love God and one´s neighbour as oneself. Later in the New Testament St Paul speaks of using love against someone who has offended you which is what you are saying in the final stanza of the poem. I hope this helps. Keith

Thank you all (Colin, Graham, Jackie, Keith, Ray) for your comments.

I am interested in the use of the term gospel in two of the comments, primarily because I am a tried and true atheist. Gospel teachings are foreign objects to me and in my mind I derive this type of love from a philosophical understanding of the intrinsic value of life. I'd love to hear more from you guys about what gospel teachings mean to you.

Ray--I have to admit I'm not sure I understand your comment completely. I would really like it if you could elaborate on your statements as I think it would open up a very interesting discussion.

Thanks again to you all!

In my admittedly unusual opinion Alexandra, I feel that the kind of love you are describing and perhaps also the gospel sense of professed love is a kind of shield to protect the vulnerable to deflect the results of hate away . I also believe that the negative emotions are more pervasive and readily accepted by the unenlightened. Point made, I hope!!

A very worthwhile and challenging poem; an original idea.

Alexandra, this poem speaks of love in the most positive and forceful manner which is akin to the love expressed in the gospel teachings. On a more pratical level you eloquently juxtapose love with hate and what either can or cannot achieve. Well presented and doubtless food for thought when the word love is used or misused. Hate requires so much energy. Thank you for this. Keith

Let's hope he inadvertently encourages people to be more loving and less hating. Ok lesson learnt, he can go now! Interesting angle from which to tackle the Trump. Thanks for posting. Col.
