when poetry is pushed in to becoming a pain

It seems to happen in the small hours

but only on odd occasions thankfully

when I'm finally able to nod off

that reasonably good lines subjects titles

or other poetic ideas

come floating across my mind

taunting whispering

go on then you baggy-eyed sod

get up and write me down

before I go for a walk into your forgetfulness!

I think most folks on here probably use the same idea as you do Martin in having a notepad by their bedsides and I'm laughing now because I've just realised the other thing most folks on here do which you and I do is do their writing in bed. After all, it is probably the ideal place where one can settle down in comfort and silence in order to concentrate and I also include Leon (possibly Desmond too) as other members of the 'under the bedclothes writing club' according to his comment and Desmond's like.Thank you.Jemima.

I am completely with you on this one Jemima. It can be so frustrating when that happens. I frequently write something while I am lying in bed and about to go to sleep. I always keep a pad and paper by my bed.
