I am a poet, not a writer

I am a poet, not a writer

but my voice will still be heard

short stanzas are my chapters

a man of fewer words.

I am a poet, not a writer

I will never take the stage

what I think is scratched in ink

carved firmly upon the page.

I am a poet, not a writer

a quiet, simple man

who lives in convoluted dreams

as only poets can.

I am a poet not a writer

a metaphor is my shroud

I pilfer songs and stories

invisible within a crowd.

I am a poet not a writer

proud guardian of worldly rhymes

my weapons honed for battle

in five verses of four lines.

Pack it in, Sherwood. I can do without the competition.
