the allowance of breath is........

a gift

waiting to greet us

at the door of the womb

for our use in bridging life's unpredictable span

a gift

each intake given

from an immeasurable invisibility

inhaled to declare us as ourselves

capable of identifying and naming everything

helping us to feel at home

from where time habitually sends portions of itself

to gather dust in the somewhere of an unknown neighbourhood

taking our unfurlings with them

to be forever retained in museums of memory

placed on shelves allocated

for dead yesterdays

a gift

enabling us to precariously float across

the sea of the future

to friendly and sorrowful shores

upon which our minds must land

that they be refined

a gift

though unseen

permits observations

of the natural all around to flourish

and ascend into the necessity of beauty.

May this gift

that in turn provides gift's

stay rhythmically sistered with the pulsations of eternity.

I really like this poem, Rose, and it seems to reflect a change in style. The tone seems more reflective. I like the image of 'sorrowful shores'. Can't beat a bit of alliteration. Tony
