Sunflower

entry picture

Sophia Loren, and Marcello Mastroianni.

She the Sunflower

in the movie of the name,

the background of my night

and to my darkening mood a frame.

Her face so young, so open

as she refuses what she's lost,

cooking, dancing, loving

distraction at all cost.

Yet, by the end she surrenders

to truth and what is real,

her heart no longer shielded

it breaks, to never heal.

As credits roll

on Italian skies,

her lustful cool, her hazel eyes.

I clutch my glass

and sadly rise

to greet my day

to weave my lies.

great last lines david. turns the piece from a character study of a beautiful woman into a lonesome note on the unattainable. powerful, because how many of us fantasize about being with/being someone we cannot ever hope to be.

Even before watching a clip (I haven't seen the movie..yet) the piece gives a strong sense of being touched deeply by something known yet unseen like a lingering truth that could not be sown. The last lines are like surrender to the present.

A very thoughtful and tender treatment..

Thanks for reading and comments Ray/MC,

I was aware Sellers had a thing about her, I think I heard him talking about her in an interview once.

I mean, which red blooded male wouldn't fantasise about living with Sophia Loren.

Thanks again,

David.

A memorable little vignette of one of the great icons of
Italian cinema - with a neat personal closure.

Lovely poem David a delicate balance of fantasy and descriptiveness, but ultimately there is that Italian ice cream flavour in the background.
Did you know Peter Sellers did some recording with her and even fantasised about them living together?
