The Appointment

Light-blazed room my eyes

Swathed in fluorescence

Clip-clop clatter of the nurses

On unyielding Lino floors

The waiting room is full I face

A man his head tattooed in

Blue - adjacent sits another

Clad in corduroy – others still

Turn pages trying to kill

Tense moments of the wait

Pre-op interviews begin

Height weight pulse their

Probing questionnaires are

Ticked – the bar code on my

Wristband checked in case

Another stage is reached and

Gowns are given out and he

Who gives the guided tours

Explains the drill then gets

Me to endorse the form

Before they wheel me in

Their dulcet tones persist and

Bodies swayed - we just want to

Insert this tube I'd heard one say

I'd echo Dave's comments, Phil, and I think the last two lines are particularly effective.

Vivid, and it cleverly manages to convey anxiety without describing feelings at all - just the one throw away word 'tense'.

I like this. Waiting rooms can be very fertile, creative places, can't they? I like the descriptions of the tattooed can etc.
