There has to be a better way

Child of God
Hereditary condition
Vines on the family tree
Untangled and trimmed
In cures of nature
Aloe, lavender, bitters
Valid in their own rights
But insufficient
Pin it on my star chart
Diagnosed in mysticism
Wind sign my condition

Now scholar in the making
Adult only in number
Leveraging academic leads
Opening a new way
My hope twinkles like glitter
For pills and therapy
All free of charge
But insufficient
Public hospitals costing days
I do not have to spare
Call me delinquent
Maybe I'm just tired

Was it better
As child of nature
Was I naive
To trust in freebies
You get what you pay for

How is it so opulent?
To hold onto a functioning life
Has anyone figured out
A way to make this work
There has to be a better way

Flying high
In aerial view
Each unhappy system is unhappy in its own way
Inherited diseases
Splayed out in the genealogy
We call infrastructure
Oh sweet homeland,
Twins only in name
Born from that bloody line
Dirty hands demanding
A tithe of your choosing
Paid in money or in time
Not quite Ubuntu
Now onto brighter pastures
I meet
Hybrid blended household
"best of both worlds"
Sounding more like worst of
Too commercial to forget the bottom line
National enough to take your place in line
That is
If you're the right one
Paper-standard citizen
Perhaps Greenland is greener

This fruit of labour
Innovation built by bit
Trailing to dark ages
Calling suffering
Names like bewitched or just hysteric
Hidden all away
Caged like sinners
Kept family secret
Now we're making science
Scanning brains and growing medicine
But this fruit
Comes from crooked roots

Is this just the dark before the light?
Are we just years away
Or decades, maybe centuries
From health without a toll

How is it so opulent?
To get a seat in line
Has anyone figured out
A way to make this work
There has to be a better way

Sink back to ground-view
Timeskip, climbing the insurance ladder
Gripping money and documents
To climb out all those cracks
Circumstance growing malignant
Overdose, a side effect
Metastasis of the soul
Conveniently speeding up the timeline
Hopping waiting lists
My greatest of rewards
Always too out of touch, too late
Assessed like a lab rat
How is it possible
That I am
Too broken
Yet
Not broken enough
Each road a dead end

Now time keeps moving forward
So lucky to be waiting
Homemade salves for my salvation
Oh how I want to smile
To believe
To be
As polite as a Sunday girl
Yet my mouth tastes bitter
All this glitter turns to sand
Sitting alone
Bootleg healing

How can it be
There is a polished plan for every outcome
But look a little closer
And see they’re paper thin
The image of success
Best looked at from a distance

How is it so opulent?
To have anything at all
Has anyone figured it out
A way to make this work
Is there a better way?

Oh,
Is this really worth it?
Is true help an illusion?
Fiction sorted poorly
Believing
That there's
A way to make it work
That there's a better way
How can there be a better way?

Please, let me believe
That it’s really worth it
That there is something worth waiting for
That there’s
A way to make it work
That there’s a better way
There has to be a better way
