The Mall at Kryvhi Rih

There’s a sparkling new promotion in the mall at Kryvyi Rih,

A stack of tempting bargains on display;

There’s a range of cut-price goods there for all the family,

And war's games should seem many miles away.

But drones are heading down towards the mall at Kryvyi Rih,

They are not bothered what will cross their path;

And sixteen blameless souls which still the light of day should see

Are sucked into a nightmare’s burning hearth.

Today they’re cleaning up around the mall at Kryvyi Rih,

The landscape feels another notch less sane;

And rather than the shoppers setting out upon a spree,

The same old threats, so brutally mundane.

But horror is familiar in towns like Kryvyi Rih:

When cowards' ploys leave carnage in their wake;

And after years of combat there should be no mystery:

They never will this nation’s spirit break.

Well said Stephen. It's good to hear a poetic voice amongst the destruction

Thank you very much, Isobel. As in other conflicts around the world, the apparatus of a state is being used to terrorise innocent, defenceless people. I continue to be horrified by it.

That's very hard hitting Stephen and reminds me just how hard it is to watch the news now. If only poets ruled the world - but we're very far from that.

You manage to convey all that without sounding trite and that's some achievement.

Thank you, Graham. Yes, as you say, a horrible new normality - another atrocity, with at least 37 victims, was reported yesterday. War is always ridiculous in the light of such grotesque actions, but these are also brutal crimes, for which the perpetrators should be held to account. I still find the resilience of the Ukrainian people extraordinary, particularly in view of the prospect of yet another terrifying winter.

And thanks to everyone who liked this poem.

A new normal clinically and poetically drawn Stephen. How ridiculous is this stupid war?
