What we know on Day 1,621
The metal comes a-raining down
On its mean nightly spree,
And some more are dead or wounded
Who did not need to be;
Those at the front who quake with fear
Crouch in a silent plea,
And, spotted like a sitting duck,
Are bombed and shelled with glee;
This gruesome feast of agony
Could spread to you and me,
And those who are responsible
Will still get off scot-free.

Thank you for your comments, John and Tom, and thanks to all who liked this.
I feel as you do, John. There should never be an equivalence between Russian aggression and Ukrainian self-defence. Tom - I completely agree that freedom must be fought for; Ukraine has done a heroic job defending itself and this will inevitably come with a cost in terms of human lives. But we all know who is to blame for starting this illegal, unprovoked war.
That's why I refer to 'those who are responsible' at the end of the poem. The cynic narrating this suggests they will get away with it. From my point of view, we should do everything to make sure they don't.
