My very own quiet corner
I sit in the corner of my own small space
Pontificating the nature of my existence
In relation to the rest of the world
And consider myself to be of good fortune
Knowing that I feel safe
As although there is some political uncertainty in my country
The price of petrol fluctuates
And the price of food seems to be going up
But I do not live in a place where an earthquake has recently torn
My city apart
Nor do I live in a war zone where all the buildings around me have been
Bombed to rubble and I have to live in a city of tents
Fighting for food and water
Neither do I live in a war- torn country that is
Trying to defend itself from a neighbouring aggressor
Who is determined to take over parts of my country
No, my small corner is relatively quiet
I have beautiful countryside close by where I can walk in solitude
This my quiet corner
Where I can exist
Where I can rest
Free from anxiety and concern
About where the next meal is coming from
Or will my children be safe
Will there be medicine and hospitals
No this is my small quiet corner
Where I can pull up my drawbridge and say goodnight
To the world and all its troubles
Except
Except I can’t because
I hear and I see and I read about the world and its troubles
And it saddens me
Because everyone should have their very own
Quiet corner where they can for at least a while
Say go away this my very own quiet corner of my very own
Spot
My piece of peace
So is it too much to ask
The same for everybody else
