Best Friend
Yesterday, when I was at the park,
I saw two girls, painting a rock,
And unwittingly, I thought of us,
Felt that familiar, all-consuming ache in my gut,
And in that moment, I wished so strongly
That you were sat here, right next to me
To whisper witless jokes in my ear,
Brighten my world with your easy cheer,
And I wished, oh how I wished,
I could revisit the past, if only once,
Make things right, forgive your insolence,
Just so you wouldn’t slip away like grains of sand,
You’d hold my heart again in the palm of your hand,
For you were part of my soul, now I’m lonesome,
Tell me, how does one relinquish such devotion?
I tried so hard to forget you, tried so hard to stay mad,
But I couldn’t undo that you were the best friend I ever had.
So I hope you miss me too, I hope you know,
That even though we fell apart ages ago;
My love for you was bigger than the entire sky;
You were my sweetest hello, and my bitterest goodbye.
