DEATH

Death is today
Death is tomorrow
Death leaves us astray
Death is sorrow.

It mars the faces
That were once so beautiful
It wipes off the smiles
That were once so peaceful.

Many are those
Who deny death
Beg for mercy
Fight for breath.

But few accept
Death’s cold embrace
Lose hope for life
And silence they chase.

Oh, but death’s not so cold
And mercy it shows
For such defeated souls
A chance for life it bestows.

But these gullible souls
Fail to realize
Life was always a choice
And not their demise.

At last the pyre is lit
And the flames lick greedily
As if death’s arms themselves
Are embracing it steadily.

With each ember that floats
We recall a fond memory
With every piece of wood that burns
Age old regrets we bury.

Angry tears fall
Eager to smother the flames
But not strong enough
To ignite the soul once claimed.

Time seems to be still
And trees with the wind sway
As if the whole world mourns the loss
Of the soul death whisked away…
