Five minute walk

The quiet house

just me and the dog

the front door and the corridor

and the lift and the stairs

and the other front door

and the street and the bus stop

my broken car

and the refugee hotel

the buckled crash barrier

the ambulance

chased by a police car

the hi-vis jacketed menials

the Asda girls vaping

prams of fresh humans

cigarette butts

a minibus full of Chinese workers

thick green flob on my boots

street pizza

McDonalds bags and volcano bins

a screaming man with wild eyes

TV's through dirty windows

men in vests and underpants

balconies with bikes and bras

flags of permanent disdain

blue sky with fucking rain

the bridge with trains beneath

packed with proles

rats and foxes without watches

nettles burning my forearms

no room to walk inside the white lines

scooters with dominos

dog turds and bin bags

meat wagons from G4S

private jets dumping fuel

diversions and pot-holes

man with butterfly IV cannula

DOB on his wrist

discharge papers and baggie

Job Centre piss stained

spoons

drink

bookies

sickness and puke...

All human life is here, David, or most of it. Eerily familiar. A fine poem.

An excellent piece David. I think this would work well read out in a live situation. Nice one

Thanks to Graham and Uilleam for the comments and to Aisha for the likes.

Having thought about my intention with this poem I have renamed it "Five minute walk"

None of the items/subjects mentioned in the text are devoid of worth. Whether of little or greater worth they all have meaning and are intended to create an impression.

All the subjects listed are within a five minute walk from my door. Living in an environment such as this is impactful, no matter how resilient a person might be. Without question there are far worse conditions/environments to live in.

However, when areas fall into decline public responsibility and pride diminishes, once that road is embarked upon it becomes a one way street.

Prams of fresh humans stands out to me David! I think you got most bases covered. Why was subterranean homesick blues running through my head reading this?

Real life for many, as opposed to the on-screen "reality" fantasy.
