Sherlock

entry picture

He wouldn’t carry off his act these days,

Now that the plods have sewn the whole gig up;

It’s hard to see him slipping on hi-vis

Or jostling for a spot behind the tape,

And Watson, knackered from a double shift,

Would never make the early morning train

To help him nab the unsuspecting crooks

By eliminating the impossible.

No, nowadays I’d see him as a pundit:

A smart, avuncular consultant type,

Called upon and pumped by TV anchors

To explain school shootings and terror hits;

Or perhaps a panel show contestant:

Severe, unfazed by his intelligence,

But spiced up with a bit of mockney chat.

‘Elimentry, mate’ his well-worn catch-phrase.

Thank you, Trevor. You're right - three-pipe problem? He'd never get through the first one.

Yeah, can't see him with hi-viz flashes on the cape. And the pipe would have to go - never mind the seven per-cent solution.

A slightly bewildered 'Have I got news for you?' host also springs to mind, Graham. And perhaps a double act with Professor Moriaty. The world would be his oyster, not to mention his lobster.

Thanks so much for the comment, Graham, and thanks to all who liked this poem.

PS A new radio 4 collection of Hugh Bonneville reading the Sherlock Holmes stories is very good.

Celebrity Traitors no doubt!!

Clever idea Stephen but I don't think you would be too far off with him as a pundit or the voiceover on '24 hours in Police Custody'.
