LIVERPOOL IS THE CITY OF CULTURE AND FUN

Liverpool is a city of culture and fun. The Beatles, Ken Dodd, & the bands on the run. The Mersey Beats, the cobbled streets. A pan of scouse on the stove overheats. Gerry was on the ferry that took him across the Mersey, young kids on the streets are playing football, and they wear the red jersey, or is it blue, or is it white? The Albert Dock, Mathew Street, Kenny Dalglish was light on his feet. A Scottish footballer full of tricks, and a city mourns for the ninety-six plus one. Duncan McKenzie left the fans in a frenzy. Dixie Dean was a goal-scoring machine. And A player, unlike anything you’d ever seen. George Harrison and Richard Starkey joined two fellas named Lennon & McCartney there was Cilla Black, no let's get it right her real name was Pricilla White. Marty Hopkirk and Reggie Perrin, Hannah Lightbody is a forgotten heroine. And Sir Alfred Jones made no bones about Sultanas. sorry, scrap that. I meant to say he discovered Bananas. There was an engineer called John Alexander Brodie, and the actor Lewis Collins played a character named Bodie. And a man called Cyril, who wasn't from the Wirral, wrote a book at the time it was set in Liverpool in the 1800s called The Onedin Line.

Now it sounds absurd that the Liverbird would just fly away, and on Bold Street, in 1809, it’s where they formed the RSPCA. In 1912 the country was in a panic as news filtered through about the sinking of the Titanic. 1913 The first black mayor of London was a scouser named John Richard Archer; 1922 was the year for his departure. Paul O'Grady dressed like a lady he used the name, Lilly Savage. Hilda Ogden dressed as a lady & she was just average. Tom O’Connor and Jimmy Tarbuck, if you didn’t think they were funny well that’s just your hard luck. Les Dennis, Mick Miller, and Stan Boardman were absolutely funny men in Liverpool there was a band called echo and the bunnymen. In Liverpool, some people are barmy. And It's where Bob Marley's dad joined the British Army. The actor Paul Barber was in the film called, The Full Monte. In Liverpool, there was a boxer by the name of John Conteh. From crosswords and dinky toys to the happy faces of girls and boys from John Lennon Airport and planes photographed to an invention on Wallasey, they call the Hovercraft. Scotland Road, and Tatton Park, the sounds from the trees are those of the lark. Just before this poem is done Liverpool celebrate with Eurovision fun. You'll Never walk alone through the wind or through the rain. Liverpool is a great city, again, again, and again, with music, football, and a cultural past from this Mancunian, I raise a glass.
