Riga once worked in a call centre in Thailand. She commuted from the province into a big town near Bangkok. She could've rented a room there and returned to the province at weekend. It was cheaper to commute. This was when wages were still low. She sent the money back home to her family. Her two daughters were still young so she was fine. She got home every month or two to see them. Flights were quite cheap. That was cool. Then they ate together and swapped stories. Riga worked on a Telco account. It was billing issues and phone upgrades. The basic pay was small but the bonuses were competitive. If she reached them. She aspired to be a supervisor one day. Not just yet. She wanted to be an agent just now. Learn how call centres worked. Know what to do and not to do. Some agents bent the rules. They manipulated the metrics and did fake payment arrangements. She frowned on this. Only by hard work and honesty would she succeed. Not like them. Her father had a construction business. He was above board. He built on trust hard work and respect. He brought his daughters up right just like Riga did. She called her parents and kids twice a week. Riga lived a simple yet full life. As did many others from her country working abroad. Dhaka was being modernized but Thailand was ahead. She would stay for a couple of years. Then she would go back to Bangladesh. Further down the line she wanted to work in Spain. She was free to do this. The relationship with her husband was history. It was good to work and learn from other places. There was so much out there. You just had to apply yourself. What more could one want?
