The spell is broken

I didn’t have any money

A fancy uptown apartment

A house in the Hampshires

Or chauffeur driven car

And it seemed to be constantly raining

The heating was broken

The days were screaming into dark all too quickly

Everywhere I looked

The store fronts showed pictures of a high school reunion

Featuring sweethearts who had grown apart

Becoming somebody else’s people

So, I sat in a diner rattling cups and plates

Out of cigarettes and ideas

Looking out the window at nothing

As she walks by and back

Looking and looking again

Shaking the rain off her brolley she comes in

And that lush auburn hair I remember drops down and around

Her shoulders like so much silk

What follows are awkward sorry’s together with what and who and why

Since last we met coming out like

So much regret and rolling thunder tears

In my head I’m scribbling notes and paragraphs

Trying to rewrite the time up until now

She stops talking as if she can hear the tap of keys

Pouring out a story of two kids from the hood

Going in different directions and she smiles a smile

That cuts through the next sentence with a pick

I say sorry again and try to explain what I’ve got so far

And she says she wants more and so we talk into the night

As electricity runs between us after fifteen years

Whilst we try to fight all the reasons why not

And a year later it’s complete

I send her a copy signing it thanks for stopping

On that cold and rainy day

For breaking into my life after so long

Maybe someday we will cross paths again

A classic case of allowing love to mature in its own beautiful time-fine poem Martin.

Thank you.

Kind regards

Leon
