Deep Waters

The sea, oh the sea’s like a magnet for me

with its aspect so constantly changing.

On clear sunny days such a pleasure to see,

but beware of those times when it’s raging.

Though storms in the deep are a wonder to watch,

if you’re out there it’s not such a pleasure,

for then you had best reef your sails in a notch

or you’ll end up like Davy Jones’ treasure.

Those pretty blue waves with their gentle white tops

from the holiday snaps of our childhood,

can soon disappear when the weatherglass drops,

and the windstorms turn boats into driftwood.

But still I will watch, be it roiling or calm,

whether stormy or wind barely blowing,

‘cause the scent of the surf is such sweet briny balm

I just bask in the bliss it’s bestowing.

The best days for me find me down by the sea

where its depths stir my deepest emotion,

and I can relax, let my daydreams run free

at the vastness I see in the ocean.

Thanks, Stephen. Maybe not a prize as such, but it was published in the January edition of Reach Magazine.

A marvellous rhythm to this, Trevor. This kind of poem should win prizes.
