THE FEV ROVER
(Not the biggest or most successful of West Yorkshire's rugby league teams - but a proud and lamented one)
There's been the Fev Rovers for many a year
A jewel in the crown that the town held so dear
With pride and with passion in trophies they'd won
But you'll find them no longer now in Featherstone.
And it's no, nay, never,
No, nay, never no more
Will they cheer the Fev Rovers
No never no more.
They've beaten at Wembley the big boys like Hull
And 10 years beforehand had beat Bradford Bulls
15,000+ went down to the game
The town's population? Exactly the same.
And it's....
Riots occurred in 1893
When soldiers killed strikers at Fev's colliery
A hundred years later and Ackton Hall closed
But Rovers continued the town all supposed.
And it's...
Where once the huge crowds would have swayed and have flowed
And floodlights burned brightly as they glared and glowed
Who would have thought that the gates would be closed
So stands are now empty at Post Office Road.
And it's....
There's been the Fev Rovers for many a year
A jewel in the crown that the town held so dear
With pride and with passion in trophies they'd won
But you'll find them no longer now in Featherstone.
And it's ...

Since moving to Wakefield from Selby, Graham, I have started watching League. I prefer Union but I can enjoy both. There are several amateur clubs nearby where commitment is never in short supply.
