If I Were Your Dress

If I were your dress,
not about fabric for the daylight,
nor about silk for the night.

If I were your dress,
not loose nor tight,
I would stay by your side.

If I were your dress,
I would make sure every gaze
never dares to call you a mess.

If you were my dress,
I would be happy walking with you in distress.

If I were your dress
that is how I confess.

This poem is inspired by a verse from the Qur’an. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:187), it says:
" .... They are a clothing for you and you are a clothing for them. ..."
Unlike a house that surrounds us, clothing stays close to the body. It moves with us, bends with us, and goes wherever we go. To be clothing for one another is to cover imperfections, protect dignity, and create comfort.
