Echoes: ‘a glorious anthology… bursting with delightful poems’ Buy now. Limited stocks.

In my head

I am in my head as I walk the streets

The shiny black night time streets

That glare and stare back in the pools of reflected

Neon blue and green

The passing strangers holding hands

Laughing shouting pointing

Pouring out of pubs in clutches of twos threes and fives

My coat is open to the wind

The pain the biting fighting

Snarling snarking rain swept streets now clear

So, there is just me and the echoes

Of my empty steps under railway arches

Beating a retreat against buildings

My heart bleeding questions

No space no time left for answers

Crossing roads tripping kerbs

All I can hear are your words

It’s time for a change

I wake up on a bench

For a moment you are there beside me smiling

The yellow tired and dirty yolk sun

Tip toes over my aching head

And my eyes flicker like sticky moths and you are gone

My feet down on to the pavement

And I join the reluctant early morning crush

I snort sniff and sneeze

And there you are again

For a moment staring back across the street

But I have no tears left to cry

So, I buy a coffee sipping stumbling off towards the setting sun

Wanting a drink two three a whole bottle

But walk out again

Eyes red and set in gelatine moulds

The day is a daze among the pigeons the pensioners

With their sticks and frames

And the shoppers dancing through the crowd

Laden bags and sighs to meet to please the inner soul

Until they get home and like me

They have had their ten minutes of fame

And of pleasure among the early spring flowers

The castanets of contentment

And so have to start over again

Now you are gone for good

Maybe after a month the change will be complete

A nice pace to this, Martin. The story flows really well.
