Antwerpen

Now there's a City with everything,

diamond dogs and Art...

Basque separatists and Irish pubs,

Flemings, with horses "sans la cart"

chancers looking for a start...

A crossroads where the compass spins

giddy with the roulette chance,

where keys fit cuffs and slaves begin

and lives are stripped

where strippers dance...

Antwerp-Noord, where worlds collide

stoofvlees frites and Yemen’s best,

on streets where

street kids cannot hide,

fluorescent ragged safety vests...

Now there's a city with everything,

blood diamonds

and a blackened heart...

fifty miles from union stars

with all its people broke apart.

Thank you Greg, Graham and Stephen for your reading and comments, they are very much appreciated.

Thanks to John, Jon and Yanma for the likes.

Stephen, I also much prefer the city of Antwerp to Brussels for the same reasons as you.

All the best,

David

A great poem, David. As a regular visitor, there's a great feel about Antwerp, more genuinely cosmopolitan than Brussels. The Central Station is worth the fare alone.

Admirable richness of language in this, David. Another well-crafted poem, too.
