Crying for America

We’re not the type to shed a tear;

We’re rather stoic as a rule.

Our jaws are square, our cheeks stay dry,

And yet you’ll know the reason why

We’re crying for America.

The tinpot sheriff waves his gun;

His henchmen giggle from the back.

The landscape is replete with lies;

As one more blameless victim dies,

We’re crying for America.

The air is thick, the coin is fear,

All decency is under threat.

This angry army of the mad

Would crush the freedoms we once had;

We’re crying for America.

Nowhere is sane, nowhere is safe,

They spread their dirt across the world.

Now dialogue is coarse and cheap,

The hate they sow is running deep;

We’re crying for America.

My only hope is that America still has plenty of people with the right morals to confront and stop this disaster.

Thank you to everyone for these generous comments and to all of you who liked this poem.
What makes me so sad (and angry) is that there is no moral core to the Trump regime. The whole sense of right and wrong has gone out of the window, as has the distinction between truth and lies. Everything has become transactional, based on power, and the civilising effect of international law has been brushed aside.
It's enough to make you want to cry.

The Yippies were over the top when they dubbed it Amerika in the 60s. They're not wrong now. Thanks for this poem, Steve.

I’m not crying, Stephen. I’m angry. But it’s the anger of the impotent.
Fabulous poem.

You’ve said it all Stephen. Why can’t they see what they’ve done
