November 26: Cake Day

Having Your Cake and Not Eating It

A jaybird came across a luscious cake,

all pretty in a box. It's all for me,

he thought, and started home. Beside a lake

he met some friends, who said: Most certainly

you'll share your tasty treat! The jaybird's greed

prevailed. Oh no, it's just an empty box,

he claimed, and following his selfish deed

he headed to the lake, upon some rocks,

to eat the cake. While perched above the lake

he noticed his reflection on the still

and glassy water. There's another cake,

he thought, just hanging from a jaybird's bill!

With beak agape he lunged to snatch the cake,

and watched his cakebox sinking in the lake.
