Nighthawks

entry picture

We’re nighthawks in some moody painting
Haunting stools at a midnight bar
The headlight beams of passing cars
Scan us both as they squeal out of town
You’re telling me of a coming wedding
And asking me to stand beside you both
Well, that deserves another round
To swallow my flattered feelings down
I’ve been chasing love like some wild dog
You’ve been cautious, careful and selective
Look who’s reached the finish line first
It’s an honour to be a part of your deepening story…

We’re nighthawks in some moody painting
Chests giddy with expectation for tomorrow
I’m nervously rehearsing speech lines
You’re brimming with feeling and contemplation
Life traces a precipice, a step-change moment
We both appreciate the grandeur on display
We’ll do what our parents did before us
Now, we’re truly masters of our course
A flicker of uncertainty smudges your conversation
I’m quick to offer you some affirmation
Quietly biting down on my own indecision
There’ll be tears of joy before the day is done

We’re nighthawks in some moody painting
I count the bottles lining the shelf behind the bar
Only our slurred voices fill this dimming space
We’ve been at these stools since early afternoon
‘Is that my shot at happiness spent’ you quietly question
I put all my chips on that one bet and lost it all’
‘Don’t be so fatalistic in your thinking’ I cautiously counter
'Life is cruel right now, but it will enrapture you again
The future's laced with sweet potential’
Outside, the taxies race the revellers into town
They’re all dressed up and looking for love
Say, maybe you and I
Will find it yet…

Narrative poetry - dramatic monologues like yours Tom - are much neglected in this modern age. More's the pity. Well told Tom.

Thanks Uilleam 😃 I love a lot of Hoppers paintings and knew this one would inspire something. I have long wanted to write something akin to 'The Last Time I Saw Richard' by Joni Mitchell - I thought the Nighthawks title fit that idea quite well. I spent ages trying to think of a story worth telling and couldn't quite nail it to my satisfaction. This is the best I could manage. I've been the best man a couple of times and now I am the divorce counselling service...

Thanks to all who read and/or liked this one! 😃

Well said Tom. The feeling I get from what I've seen of Hopper's works, is a sense of desolation or of loneliness.
