Taps Upon the Forehead
I was driven down the highway
In a spanking silver car
24 and looking for an answer
But hadn’t gotten very far
And as I looked across my shoulder
To the school kids running by
Their hopeful eyes seemed dampened
By the clouded grey of mine
The suffocation only stops
Just when the lights go down
But from the land into the sea
In morning light, I drown
My motion in the night stopped dead
By the stillness of the day
Consoled by just the grainy blues
Of Billie Holiday
Time looks me in the eye
And asks “why the hell are you still here?”
“I just don’t know”, I answer,
“You’re far away and yet so near”
It taps upon my forehead
It shakes me by the throat
As I drift along through treacle
In this broken rowing boat
