Overdue clarification of a Fathers worth

Older we became

the more of what you had intended to do and to be

is gradually being brought into the light of our lives

step by daily beloved step piece by soul assuring piece

your patient silenced constancy of once misunderstood care

that has now finally been given the most worthy attention that it richly deserves

that we never paid to you before these belated realisations

the unnoticed filling of our hearts

of your gentle firm loving concerns for our futures

we naively ignored

but now uncovered for what they really were

your overlooked ways of freeing our minds

helping each one to go in its own right direction

Father

we would like to think and assure ourselves

that it isnt too late to dismiss the old distances

that stayed between us for far too long

and acknowledge that your helpful presence

in our upbringings was always there

standing deeply rooted in the background of our young years

like a great strong limbed love-leafed sheltering tree

from where our fledgling days could blossom and grow

until the time came for us all to take flight with your blessings

strong enough to fly as high as you intended we should

to where unlimited heights of Fatherly love awaited and waits

where with these wings that you fully opened

we shall follow your guiding spirit

towards no brighter a sun than the one you placed in our every day

No, it isn't personal Rose and I agree that this is a common journey that so many make while in the care of their parents
( not forgetting the similar role that Mothers play as well }

and this reply also takes in comments by M.C. that brilliantly encapsulates almost everything about this subject.

Great result for you Uilleam despite the honestly disclosed cock ups which after all are all part of human nature are they not?

Thanks to you Rose, M.C. Uilleam, Aisha and Holden,

To see my son become a loving, caring father is a source of great consolation to me, and immense pride. I must have done something right amongst all the cockups!

Some children are lucky with fathers who are close, while others
are less fortunate, with fathers who are farther away than they
should be, emotionally or physically - or both. These lines
certainly show the importance of being "up close and
personal" - yet knowing when to step back and encourage that inevitable freedom to fly.

Stunningly fabulous babe! some very moving lines and with respect may I ask you if this poem is personal?

I dare say a lot of people can relate to finally seeing their fathers in this kind of light eventually

that common trip from innocent naivety to adult maturity and the importance of having completed the journey without continually going off rail so to speak.

Lovely tribute, Bethany. Every father seems to be “a great, strong limbed, love-leafed, sheltering tree” when their children art young. But as they age and fathers age they become weaker old men. (I’m getting there!).
