The final indignity

The final indignity

The rabbit lay there

On the leafy track

In the woods

By the lake

Its eyes pecked out

Very

Very dead

And on the poor beast

Lay a freshly laid shit

From a dog

No doubt

Almost perfectly smooth

A veritable cornetto

And I thought to myself

This is the final indignity

To a life cut short

But in its own way

A perfect metaphor

Death imitating art

Thanks for the pun ( + explanation? ) This poem was a true event from a few years ago when I was walking my Labrador (Jake) - I was struck by the lack of dignity given to the poor bunny, but it was also, in a strange way, quite artistic?

It would have given the poor bunny a more fitting end of it had been buried.
But I suppose that in a way it was properly interred*. (* In turd)
