THE COLOURS OF THE DAWN AT THE FOOT OF SEA NESS

THE COLOURS OF THE DAWN AT THE FOOT OF SEA NESS

The buzzard is the crux of the flux of Time.
The shape of the fellscape – with rustic charm -

dips in the middle like dad's baggy hammock
from Afghanistan. The crow is so black,

the grass so green, the sky is so blue,
it's like the world is in rainbows, and new.

It's all so fresh it dissimulates red blood
up here in the land of propitious mud.

I see the whole gulp of sun lulling through
the frame of a black, thorny tree splinter into

a million needles of blind white light,
a coruscation of divinity after the Night.

The yellow WARNING sign on the telegraph
pole and the pinkish tint to the half-

a-mile-away neighbour's house make fuller
a survey of every snooker ball colour

in the garden. The yew tree is a traditional
Christian symbol, but completely original,

gathering purple in its dark boughs
as I hear the baying of the newborn cows.

There's orange juice in the silver fridge;
and the latter would be hard to budge.

Colour is the subject of philosophers near death,
but I should be years from my last breath.

The balls are broken, the Scrambler Suit
I wear resounds what I can not compute.

A dawn is an Eden an the story is the same -
we fall, and careless play becomes The Game.

Tony, thank you so much, it means a lot to me that such a fine poet as yourself should give me some positive feedback. I have been meaning to contact you about your poems since you first liked one of mine. I've read everything you've put up and am a true fan. Whether you write freeverse or rhyme there is a distinctive Tony voice and style. I was meaning to ask you if you've been published in print because I would certainly buy a volume. John

Enjoyed this poem, John. Can't resist a couplet or two. Tony
