THE SANDMAN

Turned 80, now

the old, old, guy

who once cut quite

a dash – he stumbles

on the pavements but

he won’t give up just

yet – he heads off to

the chemists as his

neighbours need

some stock. He gets

them paracetamol

and slips them

through their box.

And home he heads

to watch TV and think

about the times, when

Heinkels dropped their

bombs – but Germans

weren’t the worst of it

but Spivs who cleared

out shops and left the

shelves as empty, as

an empty, empty box.

Yet when the flap was

over, the remnant heap

of stock, was simply

placed in dust bins and

the surplus went to pot.

Brilliantly wry and poignant too. I really like this Philipos.
