Some of my work
East St Market Strolling through east street market I hear many tongues Deluge of language, rising from lungs A crowded haggling, entanglement Salvaged goods from all over earth Gather together, sellers and beggars Bartering their wares, struggle to be heard In a crescendo of words, arguing worth Bargains and banter, echoing laughter Steam hissing, grills sizzling Scents and aromas from far off shores Curl, mingle, swirl in the air Freeze frame for a moment Wonder how everyone came to be there Claiming a share Voodoo You enter my mind unbidden I don’t know why, voodoo or Déjà vu but you’re there in the corner of my eye Then caught in my throat a forgotten quote just beyond recall On my lips, a phantom stain crimson reminiscence of a kiss we never had You move to my chest an uninvited guest I have to confess- I can’t quite recollect your breath against my neck tender and moist Your voice chimes in my head I awake in sweat-soaked sheets Still, a heart beats I light a cigarette Inhale the regret Exhale the neglect I ponder how Absence haunts When I least expect Caught in a trap of Anticipation or regret No time to stop No time to reflect Upon what’s passed Or hasn’t happened yet Harbour Oceans rise and fall We sailed reckless storms just to reconnect- stars float on the surface reflect on the distance we rowed And broke us apart We forgot to swim- waves crash Salt spray stings thin skin No compass, we followed The celestial sphere Guiding us to a line on our horizon Dark clouds loomed larger The further we drifted from the harbour Skies tore open- emotions capsizing Clearing the deck, casting our nets Dredge depths, gather what’s left Of this sunken wreck Steer for a clearer coast Gales lose force, still- Fairer winds, we chart A new course navigating memories On separate journeys
