Information

Marsden the Poetry Village Marsden has poetry in its heritage, its landscape, its people and its soul: home of Oxford Professor of Poetry Simon Armitage (see links below), dialect poet Samuel Laycock, and several extant published and performing poets, the village has its own poetry trail, is the start-point of the Stanza Stones trail, has a long-running monthly poetry night and many other poetry events, as well as being the home of international poetry organisation Write Out Loud. We are building on the work of Marsden Write Out Loud group which has created and organised all kinds of exciting poetry events over since 2009, as have others in the village. Look at the links, the galleries and the Write Out Loud Youtube channel to see what poetry has been going on in Marsden in the recent past. Our steering group comprises: Jo Haslam, local poet Gordon Bruce, architect Julia Clark, member of local Write Out Loud poetry group and Manchester primary headteacher Alan Prout, Write Out Loud poetry group member and Professor of Childhood Studies, Leeds University Ken Bennett, Saddleworth-based journalist (press and public relations) Julian Jordon, founder and director of Write Out Loud, writer and publisher Press coverage Huddersfield Examiner: http://www.examiner.co.uk/whats-on/arts-culture-news/fancy-pint-bit-poetry-marsdens-13455671 29th Sept 2017 Huddersfield Examiner http://www.examiner.co.uk/whats-on/arts-culture-news/poems-now-display-over-marsden-13693418 Simon Armitage Simon Armitage website: http://www.simonarmitage.com The Stanza Stones Trail launch - Simon Armitage, Marsden Rock Star: https://www.writeoutloud.net/public/blogentry.php?blogentryid=29417 Simon Armitage articles on Write Out Loud: Simon in Washington DC review: https://www.writeoutloud.net/public/blogentry.php?blogentryid=46808 Samuel Laycock Laycock birthday event: entry pictureNorthern grit: tribute tonight for a dialect poet 60 people pack Marsden Library, 20 turned away: https://www.writeoutloud.net/public/newsgroupview.php?NewsThreadsID=1347&NewsGroupsID=4#msgcontent_89992 A walk on the poetic side: entry pictureA walk on the poetic side of Manchester

What we do

We run a popular monthly poetry night at Marsden Library (): https://www.writeoutloud.net/profiles/marsdenwriteoutloud We run our highly popular Poetry Jam (also since 2009) at the Railway Inn during Marsden Jazz Festival, and have often run workshops ahead of the festival with the work being read at the poetry jam. See the video here: We aim to make Marsden even more of a poetry destination by emphasising our poetic heritage, bringing more people to more poetry activities, engaging local people in poetry, and especially local children. We have created an initiative with the local junior school whereby our website bloggers can offer poems suitable for primary schools, and schools can use them with their pupils. Soon, visitors will be able to read poetry books – donated by publishers - in Marsden pubs and cafés over a coffee or a pint: entry picturePlea to publishers to help place books in pubs We are going to put poems on posters in the windows of local shops and cafés for a fortnight either side of the jazz festival, and anyone can submit a poem to be shown on a poster, and in a special anthology (subject to funding).
