a day in the of comp results

Well, here it is - the long awaited result. After a close finish requiring multiple recounts ( maths not my strong point ) Well done to all the contributors whose quality of entry was high, although I couldn't vote myself I certainly enjoyed reading them all.

Many thanks to all the WOL members who took the trouble to vote.

And the winner is: ---- 20 seconds pause for dramatic effect ---...

Drastic Measure

entry picture

All through the fog there streams a truth in mind that knows short care,

When lack in youth brings on a yearn to take whatever’s there.

‘Tis not the care that is not there but strength of will to cope,

No lack of brain or sense of right, nor will to grab false hope.

Across your world it lays in wait without much chance to pounce,

Until one day it rears its head ...

Gone

Any passing is long lasting and you don’t know what to do,

A piece of life is missing and you struggle best you can,

It doesn’t really matter whether woman or your man,

The passing is distressing and you don’t know what to do.

The empty gut, the empty heart, the empty life you share,

Just how do you keep going with nothing living there?

Half of you has been ripped...

Grapes of Wrath

entry picture

It came to pass that my bum turned to farce,

A horrid soreness had came bulging through,

At first unsure, I did not have a clue

About the grapes now glowing from my arse.

It came to pass that ideal idea shone,

And cost of treatment would be just some pence,

No reason now to sit astride the fence

When cured I could be soon with problem gone.

It c...

Foot of Snow

entry picture

When through the night wet snow came down

Six valorous souls traipsed into town,

Cold drips down necks made trudgers flinch,

Their sliding steps progressed by inch.

I slogged away that sodden night

To build a snowman strong and bright,

Warm snow stayed wet and soon it flopped,

When snowman sank, my spirits dropped.

Another project sprang to mind

Cute and Slim

entry picture

I had a little pussy cat, cute but always slim

Therefore, I took her to the Vet; this issue was for him,

The first thing that he wanted was to take a peek inside,

Not much meat on her bones, he feared she could have died.

What he saw made us gasp with sharp intake of breath,

There was a real potential now that kitty could face death,

This meant an operation w...

Ten Points

entry picture

Can expecting the unexpected make the unexpected expected?

When used to clear the dust and muck, does a great vacuum really suck?

One point on a clock to understand is third sweeping arm is a second hand.

Well, I shall be a son of a gun my TV set is only one!

Some smaller words can make you frown, should you slow up or slow it down?

A guy is a man, so I understan...

New Year Forecast

entry picture

Now we’ve reached the end of Bling and knell of hearts that wished to sing,

The Humbug has at last worn through, a major blow for me, for you?

Down come the lights, the sparkle bright, up come the sales with prices right,

The New Year offers many chances for austere steps and forward glances.

Three-hundred days and forty-eight in fearful joy, we have to wait

Til...

Brief Encounters

entry picture

I feel there is far too much levity

Regarding men's size and longevity,

When the hormones are rife

Have a word with the wife,

With luck she will curtail this brevity.

RE Cycle Thread

Re Cycle Thread

I came, I saw, I cycled, but didn’t get far,

I took a ride upon the bonnet of a car,

Spokes ended tattered and broken,

Nose all scratched and vanity shoken! [chew on that one Yvonne]

Since the saddle’s all bent I can’t sit tall,

Shanks’s pony seems to me a good call,

I’d use the towpath over by the river,

But too many bikes there make ...

Dinner Date

entry picture

He takes thin gruel, stale bread for lunch,

A sip of soup with crouton crunch,

Inside his sandwich, cheese is humming,

Within, his heart is warmly thrumming.

He scrubs up well for private dining,

Like knight in armour, breastplate shining,

The table’s laid, it’s supper time,

She’s never late, he pours the wine.

He’d baked round rice the best he ...

2 Taste of Time

entry picture

To snatch a fleeting moment –

Is to gain the time it takes,

Set it down, bring it back,

At your leisure for your pleasure,

Sit and savour so the sun

Can thresh your rushing life.

Draw out the spec of time

That compliments your mood,

See it chew upon the tension

That it spits out as you brood,

Bathe in all the full-on beauty

Of each instan...

Space Knits

entry picture

A whole lot of guff must be gruntled

Before Pearlit and Dropstitch’s moon trip,

So they knitted away with nothing to say

Then danced with a portly matchstick.

But Pearlit was really, never that sort,

His eyes preferred full-flavoured cheese,

He’d spend the weekends at the space port

But in photos he’d stand on his knees.

The gates were all locke...

Great Grammar

entry picture

A tongue-in-cheek peek at our GRAMMAR !

I know what is wrong, now that’s understood

Tell me the meaning of semantics,

That poetry stuff just for romantics,

I can’t so I won’t but would if I could.

Keeping words tidy, keeping their order,

Borrow for lend and question by statement!

Not every time but it is fairly frequent,

That’s why Great Grammar prowl...

Solar Mum

entry picture

Fast plunge the meteors, the silent horde,

Then space of Solar System slightly quivers,

Small telescope, the best he could afford,

Feels Tim’s eye press as his mind softly shivers.

The platform that holds up his nightly seat

Is shaken until crashed to concrete base,

Is this the end of Tim’s nocturnal treat?

Will shards of Oort Cloud delete human race?

Wrong Meanings

entry picture

It’s one of those fantastic facts

That children make the tastiest snacks,

At the learners’ wood-yard you just laugh

When thick dropouts are cut in half,

To stop the result becoming a farce,

The Obesity Study needs a bigger class,

Our statistics have the proof aplenty;

That the teenage birth rate drops at twenty.

The one-handed man stood up to applaud

romance on a Bridge?

entry picture

Nothing too heavy before luncheon, thank you!

They stood on the bridge at midnight throwing snowballs at the moon,

He said, “You, you’ll never eat it,” but he spoke to bloody soon,

One eye was cocked so badly she stared straight at the fridge,

In the catering tent, on the bank, at the north end of the bridge.

The filming crew were ready to do their special thing,

Coo and Spike's Day Out

entry picture

The pigeon and the hedgehog went by train to see the coast,

They took a box of sandwiches with hedgehog as the host,

The steam train kept on stopping at quaint places on the way,

Big pigeon got all restless; they were losing too much day.

At last they’d reached the seaside with its traffic and sea spray,

They waddled on the sea-girt but the tide was on its way,

Dead Letter

entry picture

A weepie for bedtime in the UK,,, Ahhh!

I don’t receive love letters anymore,

I am so wounded; I am an empty husk,

A zombie moping with an always-eye on open door,

Drifting through an empty house, an empty life, what for?

To sit upon our window seat and read the love you wrote,

With blades of sunshine pouring in that strike your scented word,

I’d choke up...

Growth and Decay

entry picture

(somewhat simplified but you get the drift)

That Henry of Huntingdon had some words to say,

‘We are not like animals, we see yesterday,’

History is knowledge that we may discover,

A vast and complex subject far too broad to cover.

One vehicle of government is the world of science,

Well worthy of a study for those who are compliant,

Then what about the str...

Life in Couplets (revised)

entry picture

(revised version)

While youth at full speed heads toward its peak,

I fear I fail to stroll right through each week,

For youth is spent, is gone, is done for me,

The ashes of the hearth are mine for free.

Good health of teeth and gums has deserted,

Now crowds of fillings have been inserted,

My simple path through hair is more, I fear,

While youth at full speed heads toward its peak,

I fear I fail to march all days each week,

For youth is spent, is gone, is done for me,

The ashes of the breaks are mine for free.

Good health of teeth and gums has deserted,

A crowd of fillings have been inserted,

My simple path through hair is more, I fear,

That Cannot Be!

entry picture

(this chorus after every verse)

Oh fare-de well my fairest youth,

Oh fare-de well to thee,

I was once a strapping lad

But now that cannot be.

In youth I was both strong and bright,

The world centred on me,

With bulging muscles fit to fight,

I sent myself to sea.

We left the dock to hailing seas,

With the crew puking on deck,

They should ha...

The Eftymoo

entry picture

The Eftymoo is private, quite a jingtish thing,

In the early of the morning or the late of the night,

Your hearing could be shattered when the Eftymoo sing,

Their pandemous crooning really is a fright.

Exopting their tune with some nerve-wrenching Grrräääcks!

‘cos only an E’moo mum could wurg an E’moo’s voice,

The non-moos are leaving in singles and in packs,

The Artist

entry picture

There's plenty of serious - so this is not!

Oh to be an artist and paint a lovely piece,

Produce a gorgeous picture,

With oils that replace speech,

Alas that flare requires a mug of foaming tincture,

Bet I get too tipsy to paint that lovely picture.

Avast and hold me beauties, everything’s not lost,

I found a way to do it,

Grog’s the brew with little c...

Crying Wind

entry picture

Just read Pittsburgh by Thomas Thurman. This came to mind. The connection is ... you tell me.

To summon the spectres of safe hunting grounds

Where they listen for chants of other braves coming

And dancing of wind spills their own spirit sounds.

The ponies are coming – the ponies are coming

Weeping Beast

Within all tortured souls there lays a cavern deep

Where beasts do roam and weep away their lives,

With constant search they struggle and they strive

And where they find their mortal goal they sleep.

In slumber of such depth there can be no sure cure,

No waking return to the search of all that is near,

No time to shape and shake all things from fear,

Had to open the pastoral gate to let this one out!

Faint Winter

A pastoral piece from 6 years ago. Still as good as new? He asked them knowingly!

As shaking larch-lap frames brick wall,

From spring-feast trees, gnarled shadows fall

To tell us all of changing times,

Of spurts of growth when runners climb;

Warm hearts and souls are high with joy -

Inside and safe, babe rolls soft toy.

Abroad, late crisps of dusk still l...

Weather Canon

Wet dressing leaves pocking, that is even, that is free,

Drops silently as it cleaves the air,

Unfussed, it damps the tender shoots and the tallest tree,

Like water-colour seeping everywhere.

An irregular beat, tapping out today,

Is drizzle as it pounces without care,

A technique formed through aeons, she learnt along the way,

The sound of which all creatures a...
