What Mattered Most

I wrote nothing of the footy on the pitch.
I wrote about the greed and the filthy rich.
On the pitch upsets, meant nothing to me.
I wrote about the spineless and liars to see.

Not a word I wrote about Messi and co.
I only cared about the corruption on show.
I didn't write about the near misses or goals.
I had my say about the hidden death tolls.

I had nothing to say about Ronaldo'...

The End

I saw the cathedral today...but it had no face.
All its fine detail, had disappeared without a trace.
Looking like a canvas, waiting for stroke of brush.
People ran towards it, they all seemed in a rush.

I saw the Cathedral, on Liverpool's Hope Street.
Its identity now stolen, but still the people meet.
A rainbow struggled to be seen, in the sullen sky.
People wanted answers, there wasn't...

Another of my 'end of the world' poemswhich I love to write about!

Grip

I want help, for some help, I'm crying out.
But I look around, there's nobody about.
The chill of the Winter, it bites and it bites.
Lonely, cold and miserable are my nights.

Messages go unanswered, pleas unheard.
Of this endless solitude, I want to be spared.
There goes another day, good riddance I say.
The voices in my head, now come out to play.

Those voices taunt me, of how things ...

The Ghosts of Qatar

Can you hear a sob and wail.
In this sorry World Cup tale.
Above the roar of every goal.
Listen out for every lost soul.

Beneath the sunny Qatari skies.
Listen to their desperate cries.
How many died, it's hard to tell?
Slave labour, in conditions of hell.

In the desert heat, toiling away.
Brutal conditions, pittance of pay.
Families left to mourn and weep.
Ghosts of Q...

The Ugly Game

The beautiful game's turned ugly,
not a pretty sight.
A thousand jagged stitches, scars
all left and right.
A hideous looking monster, 'football'
only in name.
A tournament born from corruption,
greed and shame.

'Welcome to Qatar, but don't make
yourself at home.
We don't believe in gay love, no mercy
will be shown'
What kind of place is that, a place it's

A Dangerous Man

I'm a dangerous man, when I'm all alone.
To moods of darkness, I am often prone.
I'm a dangerous man when doubts I greet.
When I'm all alone and I can taste defeat.

I'm a dangerous man, when rooms are bare.
When I'm all alone, with nobody to care.
I'm a dangerous man, when nobody's about.
When I'm all alone and I can see no way out.

I'm a dangerous man when the night is long.

One More To Begin

A year ago, I held your hand tight.
I stroked it most of that final night.
I talked of memories, with no reply.
The long night of my final 'Goodbye'

I said loving words to take with you.
Deep inside, I ached right through.
For that extra strength, I had to prey.
The night I ran out of prayers to say.

Today I leave flowers for you to see.
And a packet of buttons...glutton free!

The Black Jelly Baby

To buy those sweets, was a big mistake.
I try to eat them, but my heart does ache.
I should have known, that'd be the case.
As the tears slowly trickle down my face.
As my Mum loved her Jelly Baby sweets.
With Cadburys Fudge, her favourite treats!
Mum always preferred Sainsbury's brand.
I can just see her now, Jelly Baby in hand!
I've ate the red one Mum, yellow one too.

The Lonely Road

I'm on this road...it's weary and long.
I keep hearing the words 'stay strong'
Through watery eyes, I follow signs.
This endless road is so tiring at times.

Night times comes and I'm driving still.
I feel like I am driving against my will.
But I carry on, around each silent bend.
I'm hoping this road is nearly at an end.

It deceives at times and it casts a spell.

To much time on my hands to kill.

Brought up in such a living hell.
In shelters or under tables to run.

Look at the price these 2 kids paid.
Filthy dirty, in soot, ash and grime.

A day all alone, with my thoughts.
Looking back on what went wrong.
Every hour was an hour too long.

Nobody to hug and grab my hand.

Once in control, they never let go.

But once at the top, down again it rolls.
Taking with it, all my dreams and goals.
Whatever happened to my aim,my plan?
Whatever became of that other man?
A bright path, grown darker by the mile.
Where's the zest, the hunger, the smile?
But in giving up, worse could be in store.
So shoulder to stone, I push ...

Without Song

Last night a visit from Winter was paid.
A scene from December was replayed.
The howling storm lashed wall and pane.
This was the winter, in all but name.
The battering wind disturbed my sleep.
The recent sunshine, a memory to keep.
Out of nowhere, gales seethed and hissed.
As the angry weather clenched its fist.
The relentless rain was heavy and strong.
This was an April morning without ...

Rocket And Flare

More money for our Nurses, you couldn't afford.
But to show our thanks, you asked us to applaud.
So when the next round of MP pay talks are due.
Would you be offended if we do the same for you?
Into the sky we could even launch rocket and flare.
To show Members of Parliament how much we care.
Most of you have second jobs, in some cases three.
Do you need more money...seems like greed to me.

Me And My Girls

Me and my girls, one, two and three.
They mean all the whole world to me.
Emma and Rachel, daughters of mine.
Everyday they make the sun shine.
Then Granddaughter Alba came along.
So funny with her 'baby shark' song!
I am so lucky, I feel blessed, I really do.
And girl number four in Summer is due.
Another granddaughter to cuddle tight
So I thank God for my girls every night.

A Journey Over (A Poem For Mothers Day)

All the jobs have been done.
All the errands have been run.
No further tasks to complete.
Time to rest, put up your feet!
All i's dotted, all t's crossed.
No more pain, or winter frost.
No more targets to be met.
No more winters, long and wet.
Just Heavenly sun awaits you.
And every dream to come true.
A journey over, now a new ride.
This one with God by your side.

Wayside

So much love fell by the wayside.
Failure on failure, down on pride.
More than once lightening struck.
I can't put it all down to bad luck.
That's an easy old excuse to make.
But so much blame I have to take.
Holes dug for myself, lots and deep.
And so many promises I didn't keep.
Alone by the wayside, you'll find me.
The place I probably deserve to be.

When You're 63!

When You're 63!

My thumb is numb, I've an aching wrist.
I can't clench my hand and 'make a fist'
I've got a permanent limp in my old knee.
That's what happens when you're 63!

When on the bus, folk offer me a seat.
With less and less teeth it's hard to eat!
My hearing is failing, my eyesight too.
And it won't be long before a wig is due!

More and more medication I have to take.
And ...

The River

Before a beautiful plot 68 I stand.
With a poem for Mum in my hand.
Winter has gone, Spring is here.
Today Mum rests peacefully near.
I see the road between the trees.
It's looks like a river in the breeze.
It's just an illusion, trick of the light.
Only occurs if conditions are right.
God's made it look like a river today.
I can just imagine boats sailing away!
Near the serenity of that...

Until It's Light

Sitting here alone, missing my Mum.
I'm so glad this day is nearly done.
Today I've walked every room and hall.
Restless and waiting for one more call.
That call of course will never be made.
Mum's at peace, I should not be afraid.
But some days, the pain still gets to me.
I only wish I had more days pain free.
My bedtime soon, no company tonight.
So may God look after me until its light.

Everyday (for my Granddaughter Alba)

Everyday, a new game to play.
Everyday, a brand new word to say.
Everyday, a new snowman to draw.
Everyday, prettier than the day before.
Everyday, there's a new page to turn.
Everyday, something new to learn.
Everyday, lots of new magic and fun.
Everyday, for you, no rain, only sun.
Everyday, a tiny new place to hide.
Everyday, Mum and Dad by your side.
Everyday, more new songs and rhym...

Hmmm...it's ok I suppose Grandad!

Sun, Sky And Birds

I see the events 2 thousand miles away.
And the tragic price innocent people pay.
Then I think to myself how lucky we are.
To live in a land with no battlefield scar.

To go about our lives, peaceful and free.
We take that for granted it seems to me.
No need to calculate the distance of guns.
No need for parents to give up their sons.

Our children need not fear an ariel raid.
No need t...

Still Not Done

Maps are redrawn, parts now in red.
As more illegal missiles fly overhead.
Warnings issued, don't get in the way.
Or a massive price we'll have to pay.
The World is becoming one big divide.
Take up your weapons and pick a side.
Greed and corruption, the root of it all.
Paint that reason on every bomb to fall.
With every day, more destruction to see.
As the innocent victims now t...

Cup Final You'll Never Walk Alone (For Ukraine)

The result for me tomorrow takes a back seat.

I won't lose any sleep over a Cup Final defeat.

Replace our red banners with yellow and blue.

At Wembley dedicate our Anthem to Ukraine too.

Show the watching world were our thoughts lie.

End this War now, no more innocent people to die.

Let Wembley be our platform, our stage, our time.

Show support for Ukraine, this message o...

Occupy

Occupy

Occupy my house and occupy my land.
Carry out your cowardly raids as planned.
Occupy our farms and the food we grow.
But there is something you need to know.
You will never ever occupy my mind.
So consider that as your targets you find.
Occupy our buildings, our bricks and stone.
Steal our Country and call it your home.
If you tear down my flag of yellow and blue.
I'll still nev...

Red Monster

There's a scary monster at our door.
He's after our blood, of that be sure.
Red in colour and of gigantic size.
A murderous monster and full of lies.

We've heard it all before, yarn on yarn.
But history tells us, he means us harm.
In horror the Western World looks on.
We're desperate for help, but get none.

Threats and warnings, too little too late.
You saw this coming, so why the ...

Pray For Ukraine

The stink of smoke fills the air.
Sirens are blazing everywhere.
Russian Missiles overhead fly.
Scared children ask Mother why.

Innocent lives now under threat.
Have lessons not been learnt yet?
This invasion is against the law.
So think again Putin and withdraw.

It's 2022, so how can this be?
The same old World it seems to me.
In our history, another dark day.
For the Ukraine peopl...

Happy Birthday Alba !

Looking so gorgeous...pulling a funny face!
With a cute bow keeping your hair in place!
Beautiful in Christmas red, from head to toe.
More pretty than any star in the sky to glow.
Now you are the birthday girl, a big 2 today.
So silly Granddad sends all his love your way.
Happy Birthday funny granddaughter of mine.
Hope you have a magical day, a fantastic time!

For Ronnie King...15 Years Ago Today

15 years ago, Ronnie could take no more.
Pushed over the edge by a proven liar for sure.
18 years of a building up mountain of stress.
To suffer in silence, no help button to press.

To suffer in silence is such a lonely thing to do.
It takes an act of bravery not to talk it through.
But please don't be silent, help is out there.
It's no sign of weakness to seek help and care

Ronnie...

Money Talks!

Can you dig deep into your pockets Mum.
As if this goes to Court, I think I'm done.
I don't think they'll buy my innocent plea.
The odds it seems are stacked against me.

My memory is vague, that picture is fake.
She's just a gold digger, she's on the make.
That's my case, but it's hardly water tight.
So I don't think I could face a justice fight.

I won't take that chance, not worth a t...

Opposites Do Attract!

Sharing a coffee...watching the rain.
Your friend has left to catch her train.
The Sun is also out, it's a strange sky!
Rain and sun together from up high.

They have come out together to play.
They're best of friends it seems today!
So opposites do attract, it proves to me.
And so they should as it's great to see!

We finish our coffee in Liverpool One.
I take you home while the rain...

UFO Over Knotty Ash!

A UFO hovered over Knotty Ash one day.
It came to study Earthlings at work and play.
It became invisible, it didn't make the news.
It landed in silence near Knotty Ash Mews.

From a distant world were nobody laughed.
The Aliens, one by one then left their craft.
The Aliens took to human form as planned.
And began their study of this faraway land.

They came across the Diddymen having ...
