Hoot Owl

Who calls to me
in dark of night,
Who sounds Hoo Hoo
from such great height,
Who gives a Hoot
atop street light,
Hoot Owl is who
one cute delight.

CHAIR

I had a chair
that fit
it was my
favorite niche
but when it bucked
I flipped
no longer
attached to it.

LONE CLOUD

I am the cloud
that does not follow the others
I drift off alone
not afraid to be off by myself
other clouds bunch up
finding safety in numbers
they make cloud cover
I float alone
puff out my cloudy chest
blow off the others
I am the cloud that does not crowd up
perhaps you've seen me
adrift in the blue sky
I am that cloud that is always
up there by...

It Went To Spam

Mail went to Spam
in-box was crammed
shocked and surprised
I know I am
accused, confused
don't understand
my mail's in jail
guilty of Spam.

Burnt Toast

Of breakfast's past
one lesson learned,
that burnt-up toast
is better spurned,
Forgotten toast
takes an evil turn,
a blackened mouth means
you got burned!

Doc Lincoln

Doc Lincoln was
a sharecropper man
worked dawn to dusk
on poor black-land

hard row to hoe
cotton picked by hand
still he endured
a proud black man

shared work the rule
no difference when
mules pull the plow
all work as friends

both black and white
were equal men
when existence was
the common end.

End To A Means

A name like Means
is odd it seems,
it's said some streets
are also Mean,
There's ways and Means
toward achieving things
this poem simply
the end to a Means.

A Place In The Woods

Go into the woods
take a back pack
take some water
take some raisins
then sit on a rock and
let the woods take away your worries
let troubles roll off your shoulders
let time slip away
become one
with the trees
with the stone
with the very earth
the woods heal
and rejuvenate
as the breeze blows
as clouds drift
as silence surrounds
as you beco...

Calling Myself

When I get lonely
I call
myself

it's always good
to have
a sympathetic ear

one time
I hung up on myself
I hate abrasive callers

some days
I'm just not in the mood
to talk to a person like me.

More Than Men

What of these
extraordinary trees
that grow so gracefully

Their beauty
lies in greenery
how it appeals to me

All of these trees
so comfort me
I stand in awe of them

And honestly
their company
satisfies me more than men.

Former Farmers

Are there any farmers left?
no working farms anywhere.
To see a cow in a pasture now
is becoming very rare.
Most people find the life too harsh
of hard work kids are scared.
Most farmers fled the countryside
for air-conditioned air.

The Eye Of The Beholder

Sometimes rhymes
we think dead end

are praised on high
by poet friends

poems written off
sometimes surprise

when read by
someone else's eyes.

Blue Sky

In the morning
coming around a corner
a blue sky breaks
a sky so  blue
it looked like an ocean
calm and deep and dark
with no waves
no clouds
a royal blue
so pure and peaceful
a bucket of blue
painting the sky.

Good Vs. Bad

Whenever I'm good
(which is seldom)
my wife gives me a treat
like the family dog

When I perform
to her commands
I get a reward
like Chocolate cake

So I try being good
but it takes a lot of effort
It's easier being bad
It's more natural and appealing

One day I will be good
however I don't look forward to
the cra...

You Can't Go Home Again

You can't go home again they say
because it is not there
the home that you remember
disappeared into thin air,
What used to be no longer is
and all you left behind
is now nothing but a memory
gathering cobwebs in your mind.

Junk Mail

Coming soon to your mail box
more junk mail
more than you will ever need
or read
flyers upon flyers and ads upon ads
for this that and the other
that's all the mailman delivers anymore
but we have no control
we are at their mercy
in this age of electronic communication
we still get Paper Mail
whether we want it or not
since the postman drives his little whi...

Slow Rain

When you get
a nice slow rain

it makes patterns on
the window pane

and all your troubles
wash away

to the pitter patter
of slow rain.

We Write

We write
because we are so drawn
we write although not planned

By circumstance and some
by chance
we write because we can

We write for ourselves
for others too
it becomes our legacy

We write because
we're driven to-
for immortality.

Pecking Order

Two Buzzards by
the side of the road
meeting
at the carcass

Apparently
there is a waiting line
or so it appears
on the surface

The bigger Buzzard
rules the roost
the other paces
getting nervous

The stronger eats
while the other waits
the pecking order
serves its purpose.

Granpa's Special Recipe

Our grandpa
used to eat toast and coffee
mixed up in a bowl
he'd crumble up the toast
into the bowl and
then add coffee to make a meal
his own personal concoction
his breakfast if you will and
oh how he loved it
it nourished and sustained him
in his old age
it was his recipe for a long life
we only found out later
it worked for him because
he had bad ...

Smart As A Rock

To dig a hole
is  back-breaking work
by hand
by shovel
load after load
of dirt piles up
then solid rock is hit
a shelf of rock makes it too hard
to go any further
I try a crowbar
then a hammer
still no good
finally I come to terms
I surrender
to the monolithic rock
you win
I tell the rock
I will let you be
then I simply move over
and di...

Wife Breaks Silence

Wife reveals she is putting husband
into a Conservatorship

where someone else will manage him
and tend to his affairs

the spilling of food
the sloppy dress

the dazed look
the forgetfulness

the bad hearing
the constant repetition of questions

it finally got to be
too much for her

she decided
I was no longer in possession of my senses

it makes no sense to me
but app...

Yard Work

There's something about it
that appeals

if you don't like TV
or drink
or do video games
or stare at a computer

I do yard work
to dirty my hands
and clear my head

there's something to be said
for good hard physical work
it makes you sweat
it brings out the best in you
it can even bring out a poem or two
as thoughts cross your mind

In Graves They Lay

Oh how the bloodied bodies stack

side by side and back to back

boys who gave their youthful years

now returned to us in wakes of tears

talk is not easy

what do we dare say

from our embrace so abruptly

they were taken away

the ultimate sacrifice

so sorely paid

sons lost forever

in rows of graves they lay.

LEGS

Her legs are inviting

oh my how they beckon,

until realized

they are much like a chicken's,

The higher one goes

the wider they thicken,

but oh my, what grand thighs

they make my heart quicken!

Garden Of Creation

The trail is a door

an entrance to a cathedral

leaf canopies tower overhead

altars made of stone

the wind whispers hallelujah

avian choirs sing in exaltation

a trickling stream the holy fountain

in this sanctuary of nature

communion is common

joy expressed in gratitude

blessed are those who enter

this garden of creation.

UNMASKED

Now that we see

reality

masks served a purpose

perhaps

What we look like now

is scarier

than it was when

we were masked!
