DOG WALK

Dogs love to walk

what we suppose is

They enjoy their walk

'cause of their noses

Their scent glands being

overloaded

Such sensuous whiffs

they come up like roses.

Losing It

I know of old people

who lose their hearing

and lose their bearings

who lose their glasses

and lose their car keys

who lose their balance

and lose their sharpness

and can't remember

half the time

I know of them

because I have heard stories

none of which applies to me

I just heard stories.

SNOW MOON

Snow on the moon
the weatherman spoke
white as a bar
of Ivory soap,
It's appearance appeals
helping us cope
our moodiness heals
in its white light of hope.

*February’s full moon is known as the Snow Moon, called that by Native American tribes in the northeastern United States because of the heavy snows that typically fall during February.
The Snow Moon is aptly named because Febr...

But Mom Said...

Whenever I would tell my children something

relative to their obedience or learning

they would always say

But Mom Said...

It was their response to things they found contradictory

between what I said and what they had previously heard

it could be the slightest thing

where I thought I might offer some insight or wisdom

some guidance to behavior

but always mom had...

Smaller Circles

Now

in the shrinking of our world

our circles grow

smaller and smaller

we cannot go out

we cannot meet

no work

no school

no social events

we are saddled with masks

and bans

and restrictions

what was a wide circle

circles back

becomes smaller

ever smaller

until...

there is no one left

to hug.

APPLE

A poem is

like an apple

its small

compact

and is healthy for

your mind and spirit

a poem snaps

when you bite into it

you can roll it around

on your tongue

chew on it lovingly

it leaves a pleasant

aftertaste.

Finding Time

I forgot what day it was

it's like that

when you're retired

there is no clock to punch

no calendar to cross off

nothing to measure time by

but you don't worry about it

a day is just a day

you wake up

the whole week is gone

then you wonder what happened

and where time went

if you could ever find that place

where time goes

you could get all those weeks ...

The Great Texas Snow Storm--a poem by O.L Buzzerd

Just gettin power back on

from the great Texas Snow Storm

which blanketed our little piece of heaven

and made it look real purdy like

but it also knocked out the power and lights

killed all the grass

and froze up the water dish in the chicken pen

not to mention activatin' my arthuritis

it was cold as ice up here in these mountains

with nuthin but cactus to stop the ...

Cabin In The Woods

To look out the door

see Pines and Madrones

what a wonder to have

a place of my own

where solitude reigns

among yucca and stone

the perfect place for me

to be just left alone.

Ghost Rainbow

A ghost mist

hangs over the cactus sky

a bow of white

reaches across

the barren mountains

albino arc

so rare it stuns the eye

a mirage

a painting in

soft strokes

leaving

a lasting impression.

Rare ‘ghost rainbow’ rises from mountains in Texas

Black Box

The little black box

back behind the TV

now rules our lives

like a dictator

Wi-Fi is its name

and it has total power over us

it controls us and limits

what we can or cannot do

it's glass eye gleams green

when it is happy

but when it gets mad

it glows red for revenge

it is ruthless

it can shut us down in a heartbeat

taking our world down with it

we ...

BLACKOUT

The only light we have

is the fireplace

with its faux wood logs

and pretend fire

it's fake

but its embers are real enough

when there is no other heat

we have blankets

we have flashlights

but you cannot get warm off a flashlight

so we layer our clothes and

wrap ourselves like mummies

in blankets and quilts

Someday the lights will come back on

and the c...

Snowball's Chance

Bump in the night

the power goes off

too much snow kicks us offline

an overload

I fumble thru the pitch black house

no lights no clock

no micro or coffee pot

even old reliable

the refrigerator light is off

the only thing that works is the faucet

we are captives of the power grid

we cannot do a thing without it

everything shuts down

the house gets colder ...

Shivering Timbers

It's breaking her heart

this bending of trees

frail limbs are now falling

cannot be believed

she wants to rescue

these poor hurting trees

oh shivering timbers

for you her heart bleeds!

OPEN DOOR

It barrels down on us

this blast of polar air

one day it's sunny

the next we know

it's ice and bitter cold

someone left the door open and

the Vortex barged in with a sledge hammer

now the wind howls around corners

plants curl up and die

the trees creak and moan for mercy

and puffy doves sit in silence

signalling distress

all things hunker down and shiver

...

Oh Canada

Send not your weather

down to us

Your freezing cold

Your gales and gusts

Your sleet and ice

your powdery stuff

All roundly cussed

enough's enough!

FACE LOOK

My face

is the same face I've had

all my life

until a recent episode

where they had to repair it

it has stood by me

in sickness and health

in light and in darkness

some would say

the darkness suits it better

having said that

this face is still my face

it belongs to me and only me

since no one else would want it

the handsomeness of it lost

through t...

ADS

Ads on TV

interrupting our viewing and our pleasure

in the old days we had free TV

now we have expensive Cable

which originally was supposed to be ad-free

but instead we have more ads than ever

you can leave the room

and when you come back

the ads are still running

most so dumb they insult your intelligence

and most are about drugs or medications

and then ther...

KERFUFFLE

What a word is kerfuffle

its meaning, just trust us

is creating commotion

and causing a ruckus

a hoo-ha, a hoopla

a riot, a rumpus

pandemonium reigns

when kerfuffle's among us.

Senior Moment

I look around the room

with question marks over my head

what was it I forgot

why did I come in here in the first place?

now that I'm here

my mind's a blank

what was it I wanted?

what was I going to get?

it had to be something important

or I would not have rushed in here to get it

I was bound and determined

to find whatever it was

I ask the wife

she doesn...

GO FISHIN'

To get your mind

off of Covid

or politics

or Trump

go fishin'

catch and kill a fish

it will make you feel big and important

and you can brag about it

to your buddies down at the IHOP

the only downside is

the smell will be with you for days

and stink up your car and house

and your cat will come round pestering you

and your neighbors will call asking who d...

Testing Positive

TESTING POSITIVE

We are overcome by negativity

nothing but bad news all around us

which leaves us feeling helpless

unable to control our own lives

bad news so foreign

and contrary to what we believe

we wonder if we are declining

and wonder if we will ever be safe again

still there are those few souls

who remain optimistic

who go about their lives with goo...

Unbeaten Paths

A road that strays

from beaten path

forest of trees

a sea of grass

down a side road

top of a pass

oh wilderness

how long will it last

the mining of coal

the oil and gas

the water scant

as land is fracked

tear up the earth

souls left aghast

hope there remain

unbeaten paths.

Cottage Cheese

My dad was a mystery to me

he never said too much

it was just the way he was

all the time I was around him though

he loved his cottage cheese

he ate it every night before going off to bed

capping off the day

as a kid

I could never understand why

he loved his cottage cheese so much

in my opinion

it looked strange and tasted weird

and left a funny taste ...
