Eat This Poem

Take this poem

read it

with open eyes

mull it over in your mind

let it roll off your tongue

let the taste of it

stay with you for a while

may it make you think

and satisfy your appetite

let it linger

until you get hungry again

a poem is a plate of words

served up with relish and spice

wipe your mouth when finished

once satisfied

be glad the po...

The Dog Listens---A Poem by O.L. Buzzerd

I discuss things with my dog

as we sit on the front porch

watching the vultures

makin lazy circles n the sky

the dog listens quietly

answers back with his eyes

he understands every word I say

and always goes along

the dog is always agreeable

knows me inside and out and

he don't complain about nuthin

I get a lot more out of him

Avalanche Of Leaves

Leaves fall off my driveway tree

avalanche enough to bury me

Through tons of leaves I barely see

victim to the law of gravity

In aftermath of Winter's breeze

someone will have to rake these leaves

I am reluctant naturally

the rake is not my tendency.

Dogs & Cats

A different world

would be in fact

if we had to live

without our pets

Dogs give us love

obey, respect

dogs understand

we question cats.

Testing Poets

All poets

should be tested for

communicable conditions

some communicate

better than others

once bitten

there is not much that can be done

poets hardly ever recover

they become carriers

of infectious words

unfortunately

there is no vaccine

poets continue to spread

thoughts and ideas

in sickness and in health

till death do they part.

Abused

The dog who came to dinner

had hopes on kindness pinned

alas his time was wasted

kicked to the side again

No bone or bread was tasted

no scraps were given him

the dog so aggravated

kicked to the side again

As chances for him faded

the future looking grim

he sulked under the table

kicked to the side again

There will be no celebrating

for poor old dog...

After The Day After

How many plastic

containers can you fit

in a refrigerator

all shapes and sizes

of Tupperware

stacked and backed up

to the rear of the fridge

the holy tomb of leftovers

the dregs of what was

cold reminders

of recycling and revenge

Thanksgiving is over

yet its bones remain

to be recalled rehashed reheated

again and again until finally

laid to rest

Getting Over It

The holidays gone

Thanksgiving in the rear view

so is the excitement

which came and went so suddenly

we waited for weeks

we anticipated

food  song  conversation

the drama of relatives and politics

weeks building to a crescendo

it got so we could hardly wait

and then BLAM

   it's after midnight

and it's suddenly over

all the stuff

of stuffing and turke...

Things I Am Thankful For

For birth, for breath

and all the rest

that make my life

so nice

For air, for sun

for everyone

for lucky

roll of dice

For food, for fun

for kids, each one

for sunny days

moon nights

Forever

I am thankful for

this one

poetic life.

Grackles

Their great fan tails

black feathered

beady eyes cast spells

from nether

with Grackle glaze

they shimmer

from clicks and clacks

we quiver

'cross parking lots

ill-mannered

above our heads

they gather

in plagues

defenses wither

from white windshields

deliver.

Don't Ever Forget

Don't ever forget

I lived

don't ever dismiss

my name

don't comb through my will

looking for money

don't bury me without

a poem

don't say goodbye

without a memory

don't think of my worst

but remember my best

sing a merry song

and have a strong drink

dance on my grave

if you like

just remember

I'll see ya later.

Leafless

Trees minus leaves

in winter cold

stand stark as sticks

since they're disrobed

they didn't learn

they promptly froze

like us, look weird

without their clothes.

The Space Of A Lifetime

When age adds up

we shrink

into ourselves

getting smaller and smaller

we lose stature

losing inches in height

we lose our memory

slowly but surely

then the smaller we get

the smaller our world becomes

I watched my mother in her late years

she had always been so active

she loved the daily crosswords

an avid reader of the daily news

yet eventually she j...

Sweet Dreams

Dreams are the cure

for slings and arrows

in peaceful dreams

all conflicts narrow

in its sweet arms

there is no sorrow

the stuff of dreams

brings new tomorrows.

Mother's Eyes

If only we could see

thru the eyes of others

a truism often said

Speaking of eyes, how is it

all mothers have them

in the back of their head

They see things

like no others

bad behavior mothers dread

Their eyes our guilty consciences

once caught

wish we were dead.

Out Of The Blue

When souls get old and cannot walk

it raises an alarm

no longer do they have the strength

they need uplifting arms

Some stranger then will come along

to aid grandmothers who

are thankful for the kindness shown

for love, out of the blue.

Sisters

A little girl

lived in our house and

gave us light and love

every word was precious

every step applauded

each new accomplishment

lauded and relayed

the little girl

was even more happy

when we brought home

another baby girl

and she embraced her

a sister to be forever loved

now the two sisters

became playmates

but above all

red blooming rose

through links of fence

it gaily grows

to life it clings

so grows the rose.

Everywhere that we look

Ruining the scenery

A Soldier's Death

An image stalks our memory

too gruesome to forget

a photograph in black and white

the starkness of his death

His body hung upon a wire

he was his mother's pride

now slung into the razor wire

barbs twisted in his side

What a young life was wasted

when brutal death was met

inhumanity was in the end

the result of this conflict

The soldier so unk...

Leaves From A Tree

The leaves from one tree

have all come down

and cover the yard like litter

the tree next to it

still has its leaves and

is slow to give them up

it wants to hang on to

what it gave life to

it releases them

but so slowly

leaves kept close

are the reflection of the tree

like children leaving home

once gone it is never the same

Oddities

Blown by the wind

a newspaper page slams

into the window of the store

it hits the glass

then drops to the sidewalk

like a limp watch in a Dali painting

now wet with rain

something that we mention

only because we witnessed it

and felt a need to record

such an obscure event

It sped away

the word I needed

in a matter of seconds

it was gone

now I can't think

of what the word was

and worry that this is

the onset of something else

the word will probably be up

on the freeway by now

heading north at 80mph

it's bad when words take off

and get away from you

leaving you in the dust

words are Corvettes

I am a Ford Fiesta

six seats

all filled by people

staring at their phones

lost in electronic Disneyland

mesmerized by choices

they have the only thing they need

their trusty phones

like pocket knives of the past

everyone has one on them

and everyone pulls them out to use

as soon as they get a down moment
