After Virgil

From a very early age I had imbibed the opinion that it was every man's duty to do all that lay in his power to leave his country as good as he had found it.. William Cobbett

My native land – England – has gone from me
Shrouded in a so-called unity, called ‘diversity’
a shibboleth, as fake as those who preach it.
Our ravished land is no longer a king’s demesne,
But is now a poor, peculiar, ...

Rain

Oh! the rain sky poured,
And I stole sometime from busy life,
clearing the mess of my room,
to do my favorite task.

Oh! the tiny water droplets,
falling in laps of the mother earth,
 with some thunder and lightning,
playing the music of rain.

The dance of nature,
and green leaves of trees,
playing and refreshing itself with zillions of tiny droplets of rain.

The aroma of rain,

DUE PROCESS

Don't talk to me of "due process"

When I'm marching with the mob;

It messes with my actions

And how I view my job

Of trashing up the neighbourhood

And plundering the shops,

Making hay as the sunshine sets

On the guilt or innocence of cops.

They Hadn't Learned

Noticed two little kids playing in the park.

One child was black, one child was white.

They were happy; totally engrossed in their play.

They hadn't learned how to hate.

Lovely to see. It gave me hope.

And I wondered:

What could we learn from them?

Speaking In Tongues

I just saw a poetry teacher say that we should write in our own way,
Speak in our own dialectic tongue,
No fancy poetic language, just rap our crap as we would in the neighbourhoods where we belong,
Don’t fret about scansion, or rhyme, or rhythm, or our own distinctive dialectic style being understood,
And to be fair it just made me smile and think, “Ok, good,”
So I started thinking, “we...

The Overthinker in Me

They say I'm a bit too much,
too much of everything.
Sometimes too caring and sometimes too irritating.
So here I am, under the constant worry,
'What if this is too much?'
So busy going around in my own head,
That I forget relations have to be maintained with the heart.

I'm afraid I don't know what I desire or deserve.
Is it wrong to anticipate a love of the same intensity,
or is it jus...

Country Platitudes

I grew up in a swarm of 'farming folk' sayings,

Buzzing around my head like bees,

Pithy platitudes, remarkably philosophical.

'Life' observations, wrapped in common imagery

Like these three:

Victory Two!

It's September of forty-five.
We remember the dark months
when France was overrun and England stood alone
against the force of Nazi armies.
Soon Germany attacked Russia.

Then Japan committed a tactical triumph
and a strategic blunder: they attacked Pearl Harbor.
Our ocean fortress had been breached.
That Day in Infamy galvanized the nation;
to win, no matter what the cost.

Two Soups

Why making soup makes me feel so good.

There’s a joke in our house at the moment – “Two soups !” which, for those of a certain generation, will always bring back that magical sketch by Victoria Wood and Julie Walters set in a restaurant, where a doddery and forgetful waitress finally brings 2 soups to a couple, spilling all the soup onto the carpet on the way. Maybe we wouldn’t be allowed to p...

Long Haiku Or Short Sonnet?

Choose
as if there is no fate.
Choose long straight hair
like a long straight road

Choose the easy life
however hard it may be.
At the last minute as at the first
as if the duelling pistols are identical.
As a baby turtle rushes
into the sea or into a wall.
Choose.

Then wished with all his might

And when he turned towards her

He could see the glow

Of everything that he had dreamed

Just moments ago

In her eyes he saw those dreams

And knew she was the one

To dream a thousand dreams with

Under every setting sun

.

I thought I was getting better

I thought I had become stronger

But last night I cried

I cried because of you

But

I kept my promise because I didn't cry for you

Every night, when I am putting myself to sleep

Our moments crosses my thoughts

I don't blush

I don't smile

I think of something else

And I wish I could omit everything from my mind

Missing a piece

All ive had on my mind
Have disapeared
To let place
Never to come near

I'm always afraid
In the darkest times
When the night comes to collect
All of my fears

And when the day comes
As if it disappears
Like forgotten dreams
Missing a piece

Iam missing a piece
Iam missing more
Much more than what it seems
Or maybe less

Wish I Could

What would I wish for, if given the chance?
For a start, I'd wish I could dance
Wish I could learn without having to repeat
Wish I could earn my depression's defeat
Wish I could do all the things I want to do
Wish I could prove the love I have for you
Wish I could act on all these wishes
Wish I didn't have to do the dishes
Wish I could be the person you need
Wish I could resist the sin of...

Sunset

I'm sitting by myself on a cliffside

Watching the sun as it sets,

Burying my face while i weep a thousand tears,

Clutching my knees to my chest

And there's nobody around but me,

In this world i can't seem to call home,

And my heart only wants to spread love

But the anxiety hugs tight and keeps me alone

Then darkness sets in like a blanket

And calls to my soul like a dear...

Entreaties

Entreaties

My gums are bleeding again.

There’s a stack of papers that need attention

But I can’t find my glasses.

My truck is making that funny noise.

I sleep too late

Because no one wakes me.

I don’t write

I feel it’s all been said.

I find I’m repeating myself

No one takes me seriously

Your point’s been made:

I am selfish and fickle,

Say whate...

Some mistakes cannot be undone

They haunt us with the rising sun

Memories that hijack the waking mind

And racing thoughts that make life grind

Though we attempt to bury them deep

When we’re vulnerable there they creep

So how from this torture do we escape

And begin our story to reshape

By accepting that we all have flaws

And we aren’t prisoners to what was

Noooo

Nnoooo More

You're always home - always around...
never heard so darn much daytime sound
I sneak in the kitchen hoping for a crumb,
but you sweep the floor till I fall down, numb

That's my part of the living room couch,
you plop your size 16 butt down - ouch!!
So I go lay in the chair, seeking quiet there -
you start snoring like a beach ball losing air

No social distancing hap...

Some lines on Kangana Ranaut

Wrote a few lines on Kangana Ranaut, the bollywood celebrity, who wears too much black to look like an assassin.

So you believe, arrows are sweet;
You have made your mind not to retreat,
Not absolving me any more…
Set sail on the track and therefore,
My agony elevated, fetching me more trouble,
I am in my lonliness unable to even wobble…
Oh God! How can you be so great?
Sealing my beauti...

Her

Her!

Her back,
She appeared as her wings.

Her eyes,
She showed the flames kept in it.

Her jeans, shorts or any of clothes,
Not just clothes, she showed her as a pearl hidden in the river.

Her fingers,
She showed as the waves move in the sea.

Her Nails,
She showed that it was a stone peace that was part of the mountains.

Her Lips,
Well, it was a sweet poison, cha...

Rhyme

There's a vandalised old bus stop

At the top of Markham Street,

And there when we were seventeen,

  Louise and I would meet;

She'd sometimes let me hold her hand

Or kiss her on the lips,

But never more than that unless

I bought her fish and chips.

Relapse

Solitude used to be an escape route

from the chaos of life.

My room was once a safe haven

from the scary world around me.

My house used to be a welcome sight

after a long day.

None of those things are what they once were.

Being stuck in one place for 59 days does that to a person.

My house is no longer home,

the blue walls no longer friendly and welcoming.

My r...

Who Am I?

“Who am I? I asked the mirror today.

The mirror gave no reply.

So then I asked a second time. “Who am I?”

I was given nothing but a half-hearted shrug.

My impatience got the best of me so I shouted once more.

“I said who am I?” Silence fell all around striking something  deep from within

I leaned into the mirror searching for an answer but the only thing I found was the face o...

Original Sin

Adam and Eve had a trick up their sleeve
Being there when the world was begun
It’s a little pet peeve, which brings on a slight seethe -
They were there at the start, so they won

Some theologists say that if they had their way
They’d get rid of original sin
But our Man of God is a little bit odd
He goes into the box with a grin

He created devotion by stirring the notion
That he’s hea...

Forget the finish line
It's a start

AND SO

And what did you fear when you

thought you might have to fight, again,

to win invitations for your heart and voice, to

reach out with ease to whoever happened to be there?

Now it was, you said, time for poets to refocus –

not just because the others had complied;

isolation and distancing had seen to that.

All of us had sensed change.  You were

a poet if you were t...

Half-Life

We were reckless with love.

Swans dancing on a lake of fire;
unfinished art searching for the
Louvre.

Quiet & loud.

Hungry & fed.

Bones full of broken stars
and twilight;

sapiosexual
astronomers
with the temerity
to traverse galaxies
hidden between the
braille on our skin,

foolish enough to believe
desire this strong would
take a half-life to
decay.

Judgment Must Come

All my brothers are wanting to commit suicide

But what do you expect my lord?

These days are crazy, and we are not living

The downfall has come, and we were swept

Everyone you love has turned on you

Are we all enemies?

My people must move forward in this struggle

Kids are shooting for they were taught this way

Drugs are as common as...

DREAMING

Is it ok to aim for something higher.

To crave and desperately desire something higher.

Is it ok to wonder about the meaning of it all, the purpose of it all.

Is it ok to walk and see and hope that in the end it is the right thing and all worthwhile.

Is it ok to feel unaccomplished, uncomplete until you get it.

Is it ok to think about it all the time and wonder if it will ever come,...

In that year – Inspired by Kim Moore’s amazing poem of the same title

In that year – Inspired by Kim Moore’s amazing poem of the same title

And in that year my mind turned into a chrysalis

I liquefied my preconceptions

and turned them into butterfly soup

And in that year I picked up a pen

and my hand slid across the page like a gliding swan

the white lie feathers of self-deceit became black truths

And in that year I prayed at the ...

Cloud of Ghosts

The air was thick with ghosts, ghosts from Greece, ghosts from Rome, and modern ghosts from home.

There were ghosts of tradition, ghosts of faith.  Illuminated were many ghosts but no wraiths.

Her plumped lips were beckoning all and we tried to admit nothing, not the ghosts, not her, nor I.
None of us were living, except the ghosts, and none were willing to die.

My heart pounded like...

National Poetry Writing Month 2020

NaPoWriMo (National Poetry Writing Month) is a creative writing project held annually in April in which participants attempt to write a poem each day for one month. It coincides with the National Poetry Month in the United States of America and Canada. Usually it would form part of my Texas Tour, but this year due to it being cancelled, I did it as a standalone project, using my time and experienc...

But how can i find my way to your heart ?

how can i appeal to you in every way ?

am trying to  approach you and be confident about it.

What would I say, would you even listen?

the infatuation of you makes me tremble.

what would i do if you resisted ,if you said no ?

feelings i want to profess, places i want to take you

i want to say and do  more but am trying to be sure

A RAINBOW

Another lovely Rainbow I see on a window pane

Rainbows all over the world, their message the same.

A land full of perfect Rainbows every day and night.

In these uncertain times, such a comforting sight.

Now Rainbows have a special meaning these days.

Boosting our spirits with their hope, thanks and praise.

On every Rainbow painted on street, window or wall.

The building magnificent, made of the most expensive glass known to man. Pure gold trimmed edges all along the building.

Organized Chaos

For she is , the epitome of paradox
Stares into my soul with her piercing eyes
With a double edged sword, she speaks
One minute, exuberance and euphoria, the next anguish and misery

Out of the blue she utters those words of despair
Plummets me into questioning myself incessantly
the queries turn into cries for help
Contagious conundrum creeps in from behind
Eventually this complex maze...
