A Rush

A Rush

A bright spark to a dull mind

searchlights beam for inspiration

as the tunnel is abandoned

its dampness gone, the stench with it

Lights scan the heavens and horizons

body and mind exhilarated

transported, enervated to peaks aloft and wide

Ideas fuel enthusiasm to burst the samovar

milk boils over in fleshy wonder

It is worth it, it has arrived

ACCEPTING REALITY

Everything in this world comes, to stay a while - then goes,

Be it a gargantuan dinosaur or a softly fragrant rose.

Maybe one day we'll accept the fact - it's right before our nose,

But being mindful of how we are - just WHEN, do you suppose?!

Red and Green Christmas

We wish you a red and green Christmas

It was Christmas Eve in the workshop

And the elves were feeling jolly

Their little woollen hats

Were decked with mistletoe and holly.

Their faces alight with smiles

Not a sad thought in their heads

For Santa had agreed that Christmas

Should be green and red.

No blousy buxom Barbies

Or action men with guns

Just lots of fair...

I was sat outside a Manchester caf,

What happened next will make you laugh.

Sitting  there with my dog  next to me,

Having eaten a sandwich ,with a cup of tea.

A man rushed by wearing a posh blue suit,

Dropped 50p in my cup ,"Your dog looks cute."

A lady sat opposite next to her cup,

I dropped a pound in it,she was made up.

Yes There Is Always

The chorus of the poor
Says the Economist,
As if it is a given,
An expected outcome.
A Greek tragedy
To be rewritten
In modern for the hungry
Minds of the better off,
An entertainment for the few,
While the poor hold out their palms
With a radical point of view,
An imaginary paradise called equality.

Nothing to keep its inside firm and fay

Twenty Ways to Ruin a Poem

It’s best to sneak up on the reader.

Change the meter,

Change the rhyme,

Change the tone,

Or change the subject.

Try to do something unexpected,

Like confessing a crime

Or secret perversion,

Even in a

Short poem.

BLACKDOWN RIDGE

to stretch a bridge to the northern side

of the gentle Downs that sit so pretty

some ten straight, clear, bright miles away.

Our birthdays they fall in the same week,

I can feel the signs in the way you speak

I told you I'm crazy,

you told me you liked it

I knew you weren't lying.

The Headingley Taps

Another fourteen boys,
another fourteen pints
set down on another wooden table
on another busy day.

Another brood of hens,
another fairy bride,
drinking halfs and bottles
of I can’t decide,
and I’d better take it easy,
we’ll have cocktails later,
and no, I’ll get these.

There’ll be hundreds today
just like them.
Hop-licked strollers

Saddleworth Moor

Saddleworth Moor

This is the place where time has died
and earth has eaten its past.
Once these lands were forests.
You find their bones -
the trees’ bones,
shrinking into icy brown fingers
with dust and decay of heather
interred in the peaty black.
There’s grass – shivering grass -
and strange green
stunted cowering vegetable entities
and the silent white trumpets
of the lichen,

Essence

Essence

Torn from the trappings
and traps of modern life
and my urban routine,
Eschewing the shower
and the compulsion to be
clockwise and clean.

I sit submerged midst
a joyous explosion of leaves
and insects
and sunshine
and fabulous, filigreed filth
and flowers,
And register silent sounds,
unplug my phone
and recharge my simpler powers.

Earthy smells,
vibrant in their rich...

Liar, liar, pants on fire!

Preamble: my contribution to this week's Rhymers' theme "fire".

Wouldn’t it be easier to recognise a liar

If caught telling porkies, their pants really caught fire?

As a warped form of justice, it would be rather fun

To see a guilty con man get singed around the bum.

The value of honesty would rapidly be learned

If every untruth told led to buttocks getting burned.

Adieu, but not forever

The wave on the stairs

was no final farewell,

but a resounding adieu

repeating we will meet again.

Glimpsing your fading eyes

a distance away now

still pronouncing their beautiful hue

and glistening under a single tear

mirroring the evening dew.

adieu

My Lady of the Beeches

To wake lit by that lunar light

Toiling from the depth of dreams

Misty minded from the night

So the distant land below the window seems

Illusory

To see beyond the shaded hedge

Hear again the whisper soft

As bedewed we walked, that ghostly pledge

Those lovely echoes of a distant past yet waft

Silently

To sense again her presence there

Knowing how we walked at ease

There might be good days and there might be bad

Days when you are happy and days when you are sad

But in the end, it's what you are most hopeful for
